I did not want to review this movie because I couldn't exactly justify why it should have been made in the first place. I'm still not quite sure, but there is no poetry in death and there is certainly none here.

Exceptional cinema is a machine for empathy; turning a historical moment into something visceral. That's what director Erik Poppe does here by showing the fallout of an act of terrorism/mass shooting. In a lesser movie two sentimental moments would've seemed cliched. And it would've featured the piece of human garbage who committed these crimes. Instead Utøya is endlessly creative and empathetic via an immersive single take, a hero with a great heart, and an ending which will change you.

Terribly difficult to watch, yet effective. Incredibly well filmed. Different from July 22 in that you never see Anders Breivik and the viewer only knows what the kids know, which is very little. That aspect is a bit frustrating considering how long it lasts, but it's certainly more realistic than July 22.

22 Temmuz 2011 de yaşanan Norveç Utoya kampındaki terör saldırısı anlatılmış. Fakat dolaylı yoldan anlatılmış. Saldırı anına kadar pür dikkat izleten film, sonlara doğru kaçış hikayesine dönüşüyor. Masum gençlerin ölümünü gözümüze batırmadan izletmiş. Gerçek bir olay olduğu için abartılmamış. Filmin sonunda, Kaja dahil 77 kişi, ada da mezar oluyor. Asla Anlamayacaksınız.

The art of omission can make for a tense viewing experience, by disallowing the viewer to witness, in this case only letting us hear the atrocity taking place. As a fictionalized treatment of a tragic event, however, it took too many narrative, even technical liberties for my taste, some of which felt out of place given the severity of the situation. For the most part, though, the film is quite compelling and Solveig Birkeland as the injured girl absolutely kills it in the one scene she's in.

Told in real time, realistic, and suspenseful despite (or rather, as a result of) wisely avoiding cheap thrills. It's a politically meaningful topic, so I want to think this movie does a service to its cause in the way a fictional work should - by persuasively conveying an experience.

Yes it is heartbreaking, brutal and all the other things..., but let's look at this movie from another angle: "Why was this made?" (actually 2 movies with same story, same year). Some Norwegian right-winged extremist who is against muslims and immigrants kills 77 Norwegian people (and [surprisingly] sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention in prison!) and what Norway government does? Bans muslims and immigrants, of course.

It has been a long while since a film kept me this terrified and engaged. My heart stopped. By allowing the film to unfold in real time, as one masterful long take with great child performances, you get the full horrific impact: the excruciating gravity of a real terror event. And I can't understate this enough: it does all of this without even accidentally (through the vagaries of film language) dignifying the gunman. Your thoughts are with the victims. As well it should be.

Don't think any of us ever wanted to find out what it's like to be in the middle of an active shooter situation, but this film sort of does that. It's shot in one take and we follow Kaja, the main character, who's trying to survive. The film is brutal, visceral, and anxiety-inducing, the tension never really stops, neither do the gunshots you hear at all time. Really glad they did not focus on the shooter at all, but decided to build empathy for the victims and survivors.

A technical marvel, in all honesty quite the feat. But that's where the quality more or less comes to a screeching halt. The film starts out quite strong, but soon the one take approach becomes repetitive in its nature. The camera basically follows one character, Kaja, from (hiding) place to place, where each scene is stretched beyond means. It just doesn't work, as another Criticker pointed out. In film there needs to be balance, an alpha and omega. The one take approach remains a gimmick.

My heart is still pounding. What a horrifying day. I admire the young boys and girls who said yes to tell this story. I'm amazed of the production and how they did it all in one piece. And I loved that the focus was on the survivors and not the horrible man who remains name- and faceless in this movie. He deserves NO time on the screen. *Very good

Absolutely horrifying to watch, which is exactly as it should be. Erik Poppe and the writers set out to make something that seems impossible to handle with the proper amount of respect for the victims and their experience. This movie does exactly that.

As a Norwegian I had high expectations about this. Terrible acting, awful dialogue and annoying filming is keywords, but the worst part is that you actually didn't see the killer more than 2 seconds the entire movie. I get that they didn't want it to be about him, but you are actually missing the key ingredient in this movie. It happened so much on that day, and we are restricted to follow just a few kids on their journey that day. Not nearly as emotional and brutal as it should have been,
