VANish

It's a B-movie about a kidnapping that turns into a bloody road trip. It works about as well as you might expect. Is it fun? Kind of, if you're into that sort of thing. If B-movies are your jam, give it a look; if lots of blood turns you off movies, skip it.

Essentially, an.. um... "homage" to Tarantino flicks, without any of the talent. Which would make it a Robert Rodriguez flick. With much lower--okay, non-existent--production values. The only engaging thing in this is the opening conversation between Max and Jack.

To make an early-Tarrantino-esque crime movie now has an almost retro quality, so a very early conversation between central characters on their way to the beginning of the narrative seems more stylistically homage-y than plagiaristic even if, of course, it can be and is both. Within limited generic ambitions the film is not too badly done, and the script in some ways is somewhat better than one might expect, but ultimately the limited ambition makes the movie a bit underwhelming.

Fun low-budget indie exploitation film let down by a seriously rushed ending and only features 2 minutes of Danny Trejo

VANish (2015) is a micro budget independent film shot in 13 days with virtual nobodies (plus a couple of scenes with known faces). Wasn't expecting to like this much, but I did! Very simple and effective as we witness one of the most amateurish kidnappings of all time, and watch it go even more downhill form there. THEN Danny Trejo turns up....

Perhaps the biggest plus of this film is the simplicity of the story: two perfectly normal looking weirdos (a kind of "Dumb and Dumber"-types) abduct the daughter of a drug baron for ransom. And that's perhaps the downside of the film. A too simplistic story.
