It's pretty good for what it is. What it is, however, is a mostly forgettable comedy with some memorable gags.

I found this hilarious at one time but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I think the repeated exposure has killed it off a bit. Still, Chase's rant towards the end when they want to turn around is one of my favorite movie monologues. "What do you think, Clark?" "I think you're all fucked in the head."

I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten hours from the fucking fun park and you want to bail out. Well I'll tell you something. This is no longer a vacation. It's a quest. It's a quest for fun. I'm gonna have fun and you're gonna have fun. We're all gonna have so much fucking fun we'll need plastic surgeory to remove our godamn smiles. You'll be whistling 'Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah' out of your assholes! I gotta be crazy! I'm on a pilgrimage to see a moose. Praise Marty Moose! Holy Shit!

Pretty much the quintessential early 80s comedy. Everything about it oozes with the spirit of the era, but whatever may have aged awkwardly, Chevy Chase's skill as a physical comedian is immortal. Definitely fun as hell. Also, when I first saw it as a little kid, Beverly D'Angelo gratuitous tits made my eyes explode out of my skull. Holiday roooaaaoAAAOoooOAAoooood!

Very memorable and fun to watch evey couple years. Not quite as good as Christmas Vacation but it has numerous laughs and touching moments. I think just about every American can relate to at least one part of this film I love the stop in East St. Louis. This movie also has some of the best opening and closing credits with the postcards and then pictures from their trip.

National Lampoon's Vacation is a classic. I've seen this movie dozens of times probably and I've always enjoyed it. The comedy timing is perfect. Chase plays a perfect asshole. D'Angelo proves that she should have been a much bigger success whenever I see her in any of these movies. It's a sweet movie about a man who just wants to be closer to his family. This was the first time that I noticed 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski as Cousin Eddie's daughter. It's a near perfect movie.

Enjoyable comedy is too leisurely paced and episodic (especially in the mid-section), and lacks the clockwork efficiency of CHRISTMAS, but is still consistently amusing, with some genuine belly-laughs along the way, and a delightfully dark undertone which helps balances Chase's "all-American" nerdy Dad. Sequence with Quaid's repulsive Cousin Eddie is a stand-out; a reminder that in the 80s an ostensible 'family film' was still allowed to be quite racy in terms of the hard-edge of its humour.

It would have been nice if the tone of the opening credits sequence, with old postcards for visuals and a peppy pop-song parody by Lindsey Buckingham, could have been extended into the action. No such luck. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, however, once Chase was hired for the lead role. His idea of a satirical performance is to impress upon the viewer at all times that he himself, in his private life, is not a bit like the character he is supposed to portray.

"Christmas Vacation" perfected the dad-desperate-for-the-perfect-family-adventure plot, with its more family friendly script. But this was the first modern road trip comedy, so you have to give it its props. But Clark, Clark, Clark...why go out for Christie Brinkley when you have a perfectly good Beverly D'Angelo at home!

These days Chevy Chase doesn't get much respect, but here his tone & timing are spot on. The comedy is goofy, but psychologically it's pretty authentic. The only flaw is the scenes after they get to Wally World seem out of place and mess up the pacing of the ending a bit.

This has never been one of my favourites although I like Chevy Chase and especially Christmas Vacation, but the film seems to improve a bit by each re-watch. And now that I'm about the same age as Mr. Griswald, I can definitely relate to it more than I did. It is somewhat outdated, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, as I think some of the gags would be considered too un-PC these days. Chase & D'Angelo are fine, and it's interesting to see where writer/director John Hughes came from.

It felt very much of its time, and therefore didn't have a huge impact on me now. I couldn't really call it funny because I didn't actually laugh properly at all, but it is a pretty likable movie. I like road movies too, so that did help. I did find it fun seeing a young Jane Krakowski and young(er) Eugene Levy.

Definitely some laugh-out-loud moments, mostly thanks to Clark Griswold's manic drive and ridiculous stubbornness, but they are too often separated by awkwardly slow scenes with bad attempts at humour. Poor joke execution aside, the 80s Americana road-trip cinematography is nice, and the film does well at building up the mishap-filled "Murphy's Law" plot to a fittingly nuts-o climax.

While Vacation is rather tame by today's standards, it's still a funny family road trip comedy that manages to rise above the flimsy nature of its material through amusing characters, committed performances and well timed gags. There are plenty of memorable lines and sequences, and Ramis' directorial touch is light enough to make the crudest of jokes work in an almost underhanded fashion. Chevy is the main attraction though, and Vacation is a pleasant reminder of his long lost talent.
