Not sure what all the hate is about. Sure a lot of the best stuff was shown in the trailer, and yes, a lot of the jokes were telegraphed, but there were still some funny moments left to go around (Debbie Do Anything, Charlie Day's rafting scenes, cops at the 4 corners, Rusty's meltdown) Let's all take off the nostalgia glasses and remember that the original "Vacation" wasn't that good of a film either (Christmas Vacation is the only really good one) Yes....I said it!

How to write a Vacation joke: Take a character/situation and write it completely against type and expectation, add no other substance, irony, or cleverness. The genuine moments aren't funny, and the funny moments aren't genuine.

When I saw the original, I saw it through the eyes of Rusty the boy, and thoroughly enjoyed the lukewarm raunchiness that seemed tailored for my demographic. When I watched this one, I realized right off it wanted me to watch it through the eyes of Rusty the man--something that turned out to be impossible, because I hadn't grown into the man Rusty had. The result is a scrapbook of hit or miss jokes which either had me grinning like a twelve-year-old, or turning to see if my wife was still awake.

Some good faucet humour, and scatalogical gags. Also, a beautiful updated Christie Brinkley type is killed head on by a 16 wheeler.

I liked it! It wasn't this incredible experience but there were some really good jokes scattered throughout. I mean, it reeked of trying way too hard a lot of the time, the youngest son's bullying got old (but still had some laughs like "Don't say weird shit!"), and some of the situations aren't just funny.. but I can't sit here and say I didn't get some enjoyment out of it regardless.

Wow, really? I'm not going to say something douchey like "We must have been watching two different movies or something!", but... kind of surprised that people vehemently disliked this. Is it a laugh-a-minute riot? Nope. Will you laugh? Yeah, probably. Does the youngest son's schtick get old quick? Yes. Is he still funny? Yes. Are the gimmick and the situations that arise from the gimmick believable? Not always. Do they need to be? Not really. I dunno, I liked it. Take that for what it's worth.

Plotwise, it's not anything you weren't expecting, I found much of the humor worked for me. It's certainly no worse than most of the original Vacation films (except Christmas, which is a classic). Helms is pretty good in the hapless dad role, Applegate actually gets to have some of the comedy instead of D'Angelo-ing it and being the disapproving wife, and the oldest kid had nice delivery and timing and saved many otherwise lame jokes. The youngest kid's character was lame but his arc was ok.

So forget about trying to be like Clark Griswold, who triumphantly shouted "First ones here!" upon his family's arrival at Walley World 32 years ago. A wiser plan this time around would be to cancel the vacation altogether and maybe weed the garden or clean out the garage--both far more fun adventures than this cinematic calamity. (pluggedin.com)

I don't know if I can really call it good with a straight face, but it won some juvenile chortles of laughter out of me. Tons of recognizable faces from contemporary comedy TV. Pretty decent dynamics among the family. I could half-watch it again if it came on HBO at 1 in the morning.

Such a terrible movie. Out of about 200 attempts it got maybe 2 laughs out of me - not a passing grade. Chevy Chase seems to have doubled in size since Community.

Clocking in at 50% of what We're the Millers was, but 50% of We're the Millers I'll take! Granted the story line's not quite as exciting as an international drug heist. And Christina Applegate isn't Jennifer Aniston, and Steele Stebbins is sure as hell not Emma Roberts! But it's got a great Chris Hemsworth cameo! And it does have a lot of great jokes so I give it 1 thumbs up!

Better than I thought it could've been, with some genuinely funny and enjoyable moments. Not as good as it could've been, and not as unpredictable and dynamic as it should've been. (The scene with the car seat pushes this above an essentially failing grade.)

It wasn't as bad as I expected. I mean, it's a pretty broad, dumb comedy, but I got a few laughs out of it. The cast is pretty solid & there's a bunch of fun cameos from other great comedic actors. As a remake/sequel to Vacation (1983) it works fine, with plenty of nods to the original, but still with its own style. And I'd say I liked it more than any of the other movies in the series. It's not a very good film, but in terms of comedy movies these days, you could do a whole lot worse.

Vacation is just a one-style joke movie with little at which to laugh and even less to like. The less thought about Vacation the better, and here's hoping it winds up putting the final nail in the coffin for this franchise. It's been milked enough; let's let it rest in peace.

Vacation picks up where the other movies leave off - in some ways. In other ways, it is a remake of the first movie. I liked a lot of what this movie had to offer. I could have done without a lot of the fourth-wall breaking humor. The most apropos moment was when they pointed out that this is the same movie as the original except with two boys instead of a boy and a girl. Applegate has a few funny moments but is pretty flat overall. Helms is good but he doesn't really compare to Chase in the OG.

Not sure all the vitriol other than it dares touch a 80's classic. Being old enough to remember the original film when it first came out, this certainly isn't on par. But, its as good as many other comedies coming out nowadays, although that isn't saying much. I laughed several times, which gets it an average rating.

This is not my idea of a vacation. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I thought the movie was too raunchy. I don't ever feel like the National Lampoon Vacation movies were incredibly raunchy but this one just went too far into that direction. Ed Helms did an okay job as Rusty, but why not just get the actual actor who played Rusty? He's a big-time actor in the Big Bang Theory... maybe they couldn't afford him. Also why did they change the sister's actress as well?...

The central plot is poorly written and barely funny. A few scattered laughs prevent this from being truly awful, and it's mostly thanks to the comedy cameos scattered throughout (including half the cast of Always Sunny).

Thoroughly mediocre in its script, and Helms (who I usually like) just felt severely miscast here. At least Applegate elevates the material. The star for me was Gisondo; I think I've only seen him in this and Licorice Pizza, but the kid has Bateman-esque comedic timing.

It was pretty funny, and didn't completely let down the franchise as a re-hashed version of the old Vacation story. The cameos from various actors were a nice addition, and of course it was nice that we still got to see Chevy Chase even if it was brief.

In this film, the Griswolds roll their car on the run from a mad trucker, see a woman get crushed by a truck, have everything from their van stolen, and get attempted-murdered by a tour guide who ends up killing himself. And yet, they don't seem to notice any of it. Everything is always fine by the next scene. This is especially grating when it's the theft - they seem to have no problems getting money or clothes for future scenes despite having been left with only their bathing suits.

If you haven't seen "We're the Millers" watch that instead... and if you've seen that already and liked it... watch it again? This movie is sort of boring, and the few laughs it got from me were mild chuckles, not big laughs. If you happen to be thinking about watching this solely because you're a Charlie Day fan, maybe just find his cameo on youtube or something instead of sitting through the whole movie.

It might not be the classic that the original Vacation is but this entry is still enjoyable. The cast worked well enough for me and the plot works exactly as you would imagine. Not so much a re-make or re-imagining; it's a modern comedy with a few callbacks to an old film; I didn't really feel much connection between the this and the 1983 film, even with the shoehorned references. The comedy was hit and miss, but had some good laugh-out-loud moments (disclaimer - I'd been drinking when I saw this). I liked Helms and Applegate, and the two young 'uns were fine. Generally ridiculous, but could be fun if you've had several beers.

i thought this was actually a quite successful reboot even though it's B.O gross didn't reflect my feelings. The biggest issue for me was the tone of the movie; it seemed to have trouble deciding whether it was a dark comedy or a family one, and some scenes really felt like they were in a wrong movie. Helms and Applegate were fine, and surprisingly it was Chase who's tiny cameo felt out of place.

No, it's not a particularly clever comedy (the "what could go wrong?" formula provides most of the jokes-usually telegraphed and juvenile) and the family bonding/marital drama sub-scenes are bland (family vs. family brawl and roller-coaster sing-along-regrettably cut off-aside), but so help me, I still laughed quite a bit (a few highlights: Day's self-destructive rafting guide, Rusty as a terrible wing-man for his son, classic Clark fumbling a guitar, hot springs mix-up, police stand-off).
