With leads this miscast and/or unlikeable, all the CGI colors in the world can't turn this into something worthwhile. The opening minutes really drew me in, but then some vague plot-like thing starts (...Oh, I've been told it was the actual plot) and it's all downhill from there. Much like me, it's pretty damn gorgeous but kind of boring and aimless.

Impressive spectacle with an imaginative in-depth world design that felt lived in. The plot was nonsense where the fairly interesting setup fizzled out and the ending sequence has the entire plot laid out in a leaden exposition dump. The two leads are miscast and have zero chemistry with each other. Uniformly wooden dialogue where the more characters spoke the worse the film became. At it's best is reminiscent of Star Wars or The Fifth Element, it's worst of Jupiter Ascending. Looks great though

The visuals aren't just you being run over by a cgi train; they're imaginative and kaleidoscopic, with great use of color and a wide variety of eclectic locations and creatures. The physical situations are also clever, so the daring do's of the characters occasionally have a fun spin to them that separates it from standard superhero nonsense. The dialogue is pure cheese and the plot is a simple story about establishing peaceful relations, but I liked this. Besson's best movie so far.

Bickering workmates struggle to turn flirtation into romance, culminating in one of them making a speech claiming that love has the power to overcome genocide. Despite the obvious effort to paint a phantasmagorical world, many of the images and designs seem rather familiar, as if the technical power of digital tools functions to thwart imagination rather than enhance it. The most serious flaws, however, lie in the weak screenplay and a cast lacking charisma sufficient to sell the poor dialogue.

Besson's repertoire is littered with critically panned sci-fi and action movies, with a couple gems sprinkled in. But they guy has always known what I like, and this one fits like a glove. From the Bowie song and montage at the beginning, straight through the excellently developed, but only perfunctorily divulged universe I was hooked. He left so much room for sequels and the titular city had stories galore that could be in it, just waiting to be tapped by a continued series.

Way up there among the worst big-budget Sci-Fi I've ever seen. Looks fine, and has some interesting genre elements that it thoroughly underexamines or ignores, but in virtually all other ways, "Valerian" is Sci-Fi's limp penis. Horrible screenplay, absolutely no fun at all, mostly-sluggish action, with leads that couldn't have less chemistry if they actively tried, phoning in a romance that would put Romeo & Juliet's timeline to shame. Zero investment or reason to pay attention. Utter garbage.

The first half of this film shows promise: even though the leads are stiff, they're not terrible, and the script features some unique and visually engrossing setpieces. Then the plot comes to a screeching halt right when Rihanna enters and what follows is a by-the-numbers action flick with conflicting character arcs, nonsense resolutions, boringly executed and weighed down even further by the leads, which are no longer passable with all the dreck around them.

Moody looking teenagers talking about commitment issues is what we all really want in our sci-fi movies. Or not. Basically, this would be a great movie if you could watch it without the dialogue. Very nice visuals, but so many scenes just felt like placeholders that should have been replaced by something fully fleshed, but never were. And I abhor the kind of romance where two people who don't even seem to respect or like each other are supposed to be in love.

I loved it! A charming, welpaced scifi romp set in a sprawling, colorful and unendingly fascinating universe. My only problem with the film, is DeHaan, who lacks the proper charisma to make the title character work, but... fuck it. There was an interdimensional chase scene, and it was awesome!

DeHaan is a horrible choice for a Han Solo character, and Delvingne is good, but is burdened by looking like a 12 year old. Despite my problem with the two leads and some of their ridiculous dialogue, I loved the film. It takes the good parts of Fifth Element and expands them to a full movie, which is both entertaining and most of all an amazing visual treat.

Besson clearly has a lot of love for this material, but maybe also a bit TOO much love, to where he's blinded from some of the weaker elements. For instance, DeHaan does not make a good lead, the dialogue is often asinine, and this isn't exactly the best plot for a big blockbuster film. The intro and first appearance of the extra-dimensional market were cool, but otherwise even the visuals and effects were profoundly generic.

Valerian, an aesthetic combination of Star Wars Ep. 2 and Avatar; a brightly coloured CGI-fest populated with oddball characters that are on screen for mere minutes and a multitude of aliens designed to make the world look bigger. The film starts strong with a bout of Bowie, and the plot is mildly engaging even if the writing is a little weak. Unfortunately, the casting is horrible. Delevingne is a pretty face but carries no gravitas, while DeHaan is unlikable and unconvincing. Wasted potential.

An ambitious movie in the extreme. It is beautiful but overloaded with computer graphics that sometimes reeks of artistic immaturity. Inspired and creative art direction that frequently fails to satisfy. The young actors are beautiful but their performances seem to be constrained by the same forces that ruined the CGI. A tremendous effort that fails to equal the sum of its hundreds of excellent pieces. I'm going to watch this again, which in itself, is a huge vote for this movie.

Like many of Besson's films, it has a cartoony childlike feel to it. it's got some original neat visuals but the loose story and lack of appealing leads (the guy sounds like he is doing a young Keanu impression) drag it down to simply a fairly enjoyable timekiller.

Oh well, the good outweighs the bad. The main characters were basically teenagers, with unlikely high ranks more capable than older military personnel. The dialogues of the human participants were weird and unnecessary for the most parts. Way too much time on Rihanna and "her" dancing skills. The main character is just horrendous. But... some really awesome alien species, great story line, a bit of neatly served social commentary on refuges, genocide, pride... and of course fantastic visuals.

In which computer generated pixels move about on the screen for no apparent reason. Captures the look of the comic, but what looked wonderfully trippy on paper just looks like... well, CGI on screen, and the dull leads and gotta-squeeze-it-all-in plot don't help elevate it.

In a world of staggeringly beautiful visuals and clever concepts, strict adherence to White Man's Patriarchy and the gender binary across alien culture and five hundred years in the future is a shocking disappointment. I would consider this film eminently imaginative--and its sets, colours, and many of its ideas are incredible--if not for its ... utter lack of imagination.

Let's give the good: there are some really cool sci-fi ideas here, there are some neat designs for the world and the characters. Besson TRIES, unlike a movie like Transformers. Unfortunately, the ideas are squandered, as is the world that's built. A particular cool trailer moment is actually boring in the movie. The leads a) suck and b) have no chemistry; huge miscasting. It's too long for what it is, scenes drag and are too hamfisted. Biggest problem is that it's just not fun.

There is some good stuff, including gorgeous visuals, an interesting world, and a surprisingly good Delevingne. The action sequence that takes places with an extra dimension is also really unique. But the story is completely uninteresting and DeHaan's character was particularly annoying.

Awful. Leads are without chemistry and romance seems like emotional rape. As story goes, it is way too stretched and badly presented. Only real plus are visuals. If this is any indication, there's nothing inherently wrong w/ "too much" CGI. The CGI screenscapes here are spectacular & they're so aesthetically pleasing it's hard to tire of them. Besson's no slouch in delivering action either. The big problem here is that the protagonists are stock characters w/ no arc (despite the pretense of a love story, they don't really change) & its all This happens, then this, etc. This is no doubt an accurate reflection of an old comic strip, but a film needs more.

One of things that sets Valerian apart from other "weird sci-fi blockbusters" like Jupiter Ascending and Aquaman is its gleeful dismissal of exposition delivered via dialogue. This is an extremely visual movie, and Besson has the common sense to actually use the visuals to tell the story - what a concept! So, at least until the disappointingly tepid third act, Valerian avoids dialogue-heavy exposition dumps in favor of pure image-based storytelling.

It should be rated lower than this, honestly, but the visuals and the world-building are a lot of fun. With such a promising backdrop, it's more disappointing that the rest is so awful. The plot is ridiculous, with meaningless side-plots and a cliched heavy-handed PC message. This movie definitely was not good. But that also doesn't mean it's bad. It was a spectacle, and that's the reason I saw it. Unfortunately it wasn't all that spectacular. It was intriguing and interesting and goofy and felt very much in the same vein as The Fifth Element, but it didn't have the same charm. A big, confounding misfire like VALERIAN may not deserve adulation, but it certainly deserves respect. Luc Besson's weird little space opera does not have a coherent plot, or consistent visual effects, or any kind of chemistry between its leads. However, it does have the type of total commitment to risky, harebrained ideas that is sorely lacking in today's blockbusters. Maybe that's not enough to recommend it, but the curiosity of experienced schlock-lovers will be modestly rewarded.

For what should be a fairly straight ahead fun film this thing really slogs. Some decent alien creatures and that VR scene was probably the most piercing satire the film achieves (although it really tries to be political, mainly failing at it). the two leads have absolutely no chemistry together so their love feels tedious. The opening 20 minutes are by far Valerians best - partly due to some interesting world building, but primarily because no one really says anything! The remaining 2 hours are blighted by Bessons distractingly terrible screenplay. Oddly undramatic, visually interesting in parts, with some cool concepts, although too chocked full with half-baked ideas, it’s also sloppily edited with clear lines referring to stuff that must have been cut. DeHann was a horrible piece of casting also.

Textbook space opera. Sure, the main characters are as bland as it gets, the plot is cheesy and silly at times, but I don't care as long as I get a good adventure with incredible visuals and creative world building. I don't need more than that. When it comes to space operas, this movie delivers just right: kept me entertained for two hours, made me think about the movie's universe after it was over, and paid proper tribute to Christin & Mézières.

A fairly standard sci-fi plot set in a hugely imaginative and visually arresting world, let down by some atrocious casting. DeHaan and Delevingne's chemistry is non-existent and their romance rivals the Star Wars prequels in its awfulness. When not romancing, Delevingne proves that supermodels can act and she delivers a charismatic and funny performance that carries much of the movie. DeHaan is consistently awful throughout. There is a lot to like here: the old-timey serial reveal of the plot, the production design, the fairly adept world-building. But the primary characters and the script are crushed under the weight of the dumpster fire that is Besson burning through his budget. Pretty and innovative, but the writing is so bad. Dialogue is almost all rote, the energy dies in the expository scenes and the characters are universally terrible - from the sneering evil villain to Rihanna whose character arc is one of the worst ever in a film (no one cares about what happens to her) to the protagonists who have no personality and whose romance is horribly forced. None of this is helped by DeHaan's incredibly wooden acting.

Lead characters lack any charisma, which may have been acceptable if movie didn't hinge on their relationship. Clive Owen isn't very engaging. Ethan Hawke and Rhianna have the most life to them but their whole sequence should have been left out (maybe they should have been the main characters instead?). Besson's new adventure - easily his best since 'The Fifth Element' - delivers in spades in two of the most important areas for a sci-fi blockbuster: action and worldbuilding. So it's quite tragic, really, that Dane Dehaan (and the writing of his interactions with Cara "I'm actually physically unable to smile" Delevingne) comes extremely close to ruining everything. A charismatic hero could (and should!) have made this an almost peerless classic in its genre.

Watch: Feel free to skip this. 3D is terribly done. | I really want to like this. The universe this builds is rich with characters, technology, and possibilities but the story being told is not enjoyable to follow at all. We left the theater near the end and honestly didn't care much--even after we watched the ending at home later. It truly feels like he's trying to hit another 5th Element and this is almost there! I really just wish the characters were likable and the story was any good.

Besson's imagination and ballsiness are something I want to see more of in Hollywood blockbusters (I love "Lucy", sue me), and the colourful weirdness in this movie's world is its biggest strength, but this just doesn't gel very well. The plot isn't that interesting in the first place but the biggest problem is the casting; you need charismatic leads to ease you into this wild galaxy but DeHaan and Delevingne (who fares the better of the two, admittedly) don't have any chemistry at all.

The plot was simple but enjoyable. The dialogue weren't bad and i loved Laureline. I didn't want a serious movie, just an adventure like Stars wars, hellboy, indiana jones...something fun.

Awful casting (especially charisma-free Delevingne, which is also the opposite of comic Laureline in terms of beauty) and bad dialogues bog down the passable story and the beautiful imagery. Better luck next time!
