anyone else remember late 90s / early 00s anime forums when weebs would get mad n yell at u on the internet if u called it “japanimation.” that was f’in hilarious. i want to go back

Anime with a uniquely "western gothic/steampunk" aesthetic, and probably one of the best vampire movies I've seen. No sparkles here, but a vampire does risk self-immolation in sunlight to save the human girl he loves. Great stuff.

What if Rick Deckard was a Vampire Hunter? This is one of my "foundation" animes. A unique but excellent art style and a great story. Classic anime and very accessible IMHO. The opening sequence is brilliant. Not to be compared with the initial Vampire Hunter D, though somewhat related, this one is in a different class. The ending is poignant but perfect (unfortunately).

While technologically superior to the first film (and the animation is attractive), the barely there characters and dull plotting makes this a pretty, but dreary slog. Lacks the sense of excitement and momentum that carried part 1, instead becoming bogged down in the superficial romantic (and otherwise) interactions of our Avenger-like heroes. May have more appeal dependent on your inherent passion for anime.

Truly spectacular animation and good direction make this anime quite the visual feast for the eyes. An actual good vampire story which covers many genres should be entertaining for a variety of viewers. One of the best anime full length movies for sure.

A completely different beast from the first film. It makes quite a bold move in taking the most enjoyable aspect of the original, the OTT violence, and makes the action surprisingly dull and bloodless. Characters are also killed off far too abruptly. However, the story this time around is shockingly sophisticated with some nice moral ambiguity. The animation is also beautiful, specificaly the opening. It may have changed a lot of what made VHD great fun, but it's just as good in the end.

Breathtakingly gorgeous visuals throughout are almost undermined by an extremely simplistic story and characters for the first two thirds. But then in the last third the whole thing turns into an extravaganza to match the animation (and music). Well worth the experience if you can make it through the excruciatingly slow start.

Great to watch if you're in the mood for over-the-top gorgeous looking gothic-apocalyptic-sci-fi-horror nonsense. Which, to me, is more or less ALL THE TIME, BABY!

a decent anime whether you like vampires or not

Not as good as the original, but still functions as a nice little anime.

For a long time Akira and this were the only anime films I liked. It's both melancholy and incredibly violent.

Better than the other Vampire Hunter D movie.

Beautifully animated action, though a bit dull at times. The commentary from the sentient hand gets annoying real quick.

Superb animation and style.

Beautiful animation telling a very dark story. I like how this setting takes things from history and mixes them up with a gothic cyberpunk setting. I really liked the animation and especially the werewolf was cool with the set of extra jaws to make it even more dangerous. It was just a bit too long for me so I wasn't super loving it all the time.

Nicely dark vampire story with pretty neat animation.

Animated action, but in the end it's really a trite love story. I found neither aspect interesting and cool art isn't enough to sustain my interest in this.

Again, I am not a big fan of the genre but this is actually pretty entertaining.

The art style in Bloodlust is more impressive and detailed than it's prequel. This film tends to follow Yoshitaka Amano's aesthetic more closely. Too bad the storyline doesn't match up in terms of quality.

Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and Cowboy Bebop are excellent starting places to intrigue newcomers into the world of Anime. Cheers to beautiful animation and tons of gore.

Based on the novel D-YOUSATSUKOU by Hideyuki Kikuchi, VAMPIRE HUNTER D follows the exploits of the mysterious vampire hunter known only as D. Half vampire himself (Count Dracula was his father), D happens upon a town where a cruel vampire, Count Magnus Lee, and his followers terrorize the villagers for sport.

I like anime. This is stupid and terrible.

A romance in Dracula the Lord of the Night , this Anime is awesome through my vision.

Great looking animation. Not such a fan of the English Dub though.

Bloodlust is a beautifully animated story of horror and love.

This movie probably isn't as good as I rate it here but its something of a guilty pleasure. I haven't seen it since I've been out of high school though, so it may not be as awesome as I remember. For now though I'm going to remember it as an awesome bloody rampage.

I'm a fan of anime, I guess, but I... just don't like Vampire Hunter D that much. Not really my thing.

Watched in English since it was originally recorded in English and released in Japan with Japanese subtitles for the English audio. It's part of that glorious transitional period where 3D was expensive enough to only be used well, so you get mostly fantastic looking 2D animation with some neat 3D flourishes, similar to what Oshii was directing around this time in GiTS and Patlabor 2. The writing is a bit of an improvement over the '85 movie, but still clearly the weakest part of the movie.

Immense improvement over the original, stylistically and in voice-acting. The definition of what Anime should be, not cartoon network chaff.

Gotta be in your anime movie list.

Stunning art direction and animation, but let down in most other departments.

This was my first experience with the Vampire Hunter D franchise, and I get the feeling this movie has about ten million elements that are explained better in the source material. But if you're okay with a ton of strange characters, strange character traits, and unexplained origins, it's still perfectly possible to follow the story and admire all the artwork that went into it.

Wonderful animation, but that's about it. Worth a watch if you're into anime or vampires, I guess.

Vampires anime = AWSOME - Way better then first movie

Great visuals, classic romantic/gothic screenplay. Awesome designs, levels and comcepts. I dont much of a vampire fan but this movie is gold.. Its like victoria nera blade but even more astonishing :D

Successful composition of vampire, fantasy, steampunk and -even mutant settings. A little bit love, a little bit blood; In short it's a decent anime and must see for any anime fanboys.

A great animation about D, a 1/2 vampire. He battles against other vampires with a gool story and great animation.

Looks great, and doesn't squander any time on superfluous exposition. Good entertainment.

The world, the atmosphere, the action, the characters, the animation, the pacing -- all are truly excellent. The story is very straightforward, but is told flawlessly. No matter how many times I watch it, when Leila says "Fly!" I begin to tear up.
