Strong candidate for the most annoying movie ever. Cruise and Cruz are the worst on-screen couple in the history of ... history, and the movie basically plays like: "Yay! I'm pretty, I can fuck who I want, oh no! I'm ugly! My life is shit, Yay! I'm pretty again, I can fuck... wait. Why can I stop time?" Crowe, if you're reading this: if you love music so much become a fucking musician.

This has been laying around my house for 6 years, and I finally gave it a shot; It was OK, and I don't think I ever used that word before. Overrated by many: the lack of consistency, nice soundtrack in the wrong places, and Cruise's crazy performance justify my opinion. I'll definitely give the original a chance, but Vanilla Sky seems like an unnecessary remake.

One of the worst movie-going experiences of my life. Interminable. So. Ungodly. Long. And not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. Look at the picture of Cruise, here...that's how I felt after the 2nd false ending.

The scene near the end where that guy neatly explains everything to Cruise's character, thus killing any tension the movie may have had, is a perfect example of using music as a crutch. Of course the scene is going to seem beautiful and profound when god damn Sigur Rós is playing in the background, but how good would the scene be without the music? It wouldn't be such a problem if Crowe didn't keep doing it again and again. Vanilla Sky does have some good moments, but overall it's mediocre.

Armond White Jr. says: "Knuckle-headed americans miss the boat on yet another all-time classic. Negating the mindsets that have been stultified into semiotic stupors by narcissistic cartoon-like melodramas like The Dark Knight, the film is ostensibly about identity, but to those w/ eyes to see, the film blazes new ground in racial politics. Unable to dig deeper, critics found the false endings tiresome rather than understanding the castrating metaphor for the civil rights movement at its center

At one single point I thought this film might become interesting. That, unfortunately, was short-lived. Hackneyed visual cliches, Penelope Cruz trying to hard to be exotic, Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise rather an independently interesting character and a plot predictably complex and ridiculous in equal measure. It's a personal thing, of course, but I prefer films that are engaging because of the development of their characters, not daft plot puzzles that need explaining at the end.

Vanilla Sky has moments of very good stuck in between weird and oddly executed. While most of the movie feels like a mix of Mr. Nobody and Jacob's Ladder, the ending feels very out of place. However, I was a huge fan of the cast, specifically Jason Lee and Kurt Russell. Tom Cruise was pretty good as well. A movie I feel would have been better with a more well-toned story.

A glossy remake of a superior Spanish thriller; the grittiness of the original has been given a high fashion makeover which, coupled with Cruise's self-regarding performance, fails to convince, even on the level of a bad dream.

Tom Cruise's character is an insufferable narcissist, and his relationship with Penelope Cruz just leaves you wondering what the hell she sees in him, without any conceivable answer. That being said, the supporting cast is very good (particularly Cameron Diaz and Kurt Russell), and the memorably crazy final half-hour goes a long way towards redeeming the fairly draggy first half.

Interesting premise but pulls its punches and shies away from letting the audience put it together. Think Lost Highway but the 'mystery man' is replaced by 'explanation guy'. I have a soft spot for the contemporary needle drops but none actually match a scene well. Fundamentally, I found the romance unconvincing. Or at least Cruise/Diaz seemed to have more chemistry than Cruise/Cruz did...

Despite the fact that it stars clinically insane Tom Cruise, this film is a true magnum opus from Cameron Crowe with a final-act revelation so astounding it gives M. Knight Shyamalan cold sweats at night. Appropriately enough, the soundtrack is so good it could be a classic album in its own right with popular music tunes from almost all eras and all genres perfectly capturing the various moods of the film and never seeming out of place.

An abysmal remake of Abre of Los Ojos. The dialogue is terrible, the chemistry seems forced, and this scores 0 points for originality (just barely diverging from the original). Crowe has a knack for choosing the right music, and that's the only thing that redeems this movie from being a disaster.

By no means flawless - that exposition dump towards the end is pretty excessive, and the construction isn't always as elegant as its premise - but its treatment of dreams, entertainment, and imagination as comforts in a world that is often as not cruel and imperfect strike such a chord with me that I can't help but really dig it. 18-year-old me probably would've been over the moon for this.

Crowe draws excellent performances from his supporting cast but fumbles the romance ("We'll meet in another life when we're both cats" - WHAT the F...?) and is at times unable or unwilling to reign Cruise in. The original was a great movie. This is both better and occasionally completely incompetent. The mysterious set-up and the thought-provoking pay-off remain effective, but because Crowe's sensibilities don't mesh with the material, some scenes and soundtrack choices are frustratingly shitty.

With lush cinematography by John Toll that paints the autumn and winter seasons of New York City with a dreamlike artistry, this movie, which acquires its curious title from a painting hanging in David's home, is a ravishing stunner that never loses its way once -- a particular triumph for such a labyrinthine movie concept. The fine line between dreams and reality is stirring, to say the least, reminding one of their own experiences in a similar state of sleep.

I quite liked this film. I wasn't sure what to think of it for a lot of the running time, but I really liked how it came together in the end. Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast were fine. The soundtrack's good, if a bit obtrusive. Sure, it's very blunt and obvious at points, but it's an interesting enough idea, even though it probably could've been handled better by another director.

Vanilla Sky is a fabulous movie, either standing on its own or a remake of the very good Spanish film. It provides a lot to think about, some very touching scenes -- both as singular scenes and in the context of the entire film -- and some oddly comedic moments, as long as you're okay with some dark humor. It's a film that presents you with many valid ways to look at it, some good-to-great performances from its cast, and a very solid payoff at the end. It's complex, not confusing. I adored it.

The central mystery's only somewhat interesting, while the rest of it just comes off as rich white people complaining about their non-existent problems. Some scenes manage to create some tension and interest but most of it's boring. Great soundtrack, but it so often feels like that's what Crowe's focusing on and not the story at hand. Will still give the original a shot sometime, it seems a lot different than this.

Sometimes I felt like their false leads to fool the audience were a bit weak or underexploited, making so there is little time for the tension to climb before the madness then the reveal follows. For example, I would have liked more scenes with Kurt Russel's character. Still, in the end, it's a special movie with an ending à la A.I. and it will leave you pensive
