Fairly standard, simplistic melodrama, but there's some wonderful visual stuff going on at times which I found myself enjoying even in spite of the really beat up print I was watching.

Before Chuck Norris, we had the Emil Jannings staredown. The story itself is the basic love triangle, just in a more unusual setting. The real reason this needs to be seen is for the ultra-kinetic camera shots of various circus/carnival acts.

Dupont (as aided by Karl Freund) has a flair for fantastic cinematography, with a number of dazzling images. There's a lot of creativity in the shots, particularly in use of the subjective camera. Although not as shallow in its original form as it would be in the censored American release the story is a rather simplistic and predictable morality play... Still, it's worth watching for the great photography and the very fine performance by Jannings, some of his more nuanced work.
