In small-town Texas, high school football is a religion. The head coach is deified, as long as the team is winning and 17-year-old schoolboys carry the hopes of an entire community onto the gridiron every Friday night. In his 35th year as head coach, Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight) is trying to lead his West Canaan Coyotes to their 23rd division title... (imdb)

In a town where football is king, the man who does not want your life reigns supreme with his queen dressed in whip cream.

The most ridiculous portrayal of Texas in all of fiction. I lived in Texas for 14 years, and I never knew anyone who rode in a pickup truck with a pig, nor did Ali Larter seduce me in a whip cream bikini.

The first (and only) time I watched this was on an 8th grade football trip. Being in Alaska, we were on a 15 hour ferry ride to our destination because flying would be to expensive. So a combination of the fact it had some tits and when/where I saw it, I would call it a positive experience when watching this film. I could go back and probably decide it's shit, but why ruin a positive memory of tits, right?

A good all around movie, if you ignore the acting. Stripping, great football hits, a bit of drama/comedy thrown in. It's worth seeing as a good mindless watch on a weekend.

Sports movie. That's all I need to say here. Serious sports movies always try to focus on the "redemptive", "transcendent" aspects of sports, but they never succeed. Why do they keep trying? And then there's the cliches and the character stereotypes. To be fair, the script and acting are slightly better than in some other sports movies I've seen. Yes, I'm damning with faint praise. Damning it to HELL.

Actually a pretty good movie with quite a bit to think about. Even non-football fans can like this one.

Dull and listless sports drama is bland and undistinguished, with the cast merely going through the paces (even Voight is dull here in a misstep in his great 90s run). Unwieldy mix of teen angst and drama spiced up with awkward R-rated elements (especially a not unwelcome abundance of nudity) make this a sleepy misfire.

OK, Ok... I know. This movie isn't that great. Unless you grew up in Texas in the 90s. Then it's a rite of passage.

A surprisingly intense sports film about standing up for what one believes in. The acting is great from this young cast as well as Jon Voight as an overly intense coach who wants to win at all costs.

It was a decent sports movie with a whipped cream bikini. All of the sudden the subplots just coming off the dartboard in the middle kinda blew though.

On a recent rewatch (yeah, I'm not sure why either), I realized this is worse than I remembered. It feels like it should have a lot more humor than it does and there's some poor acting. It's not terrible and it has some strangely iconic moments, but it's also something you could happily skip.

Some funny bits here and there with some cool looking football as well. Still it's a teen drama and although it's better than average, it's still just a teen drama.

It's as corny as any other teen movie, but it's rather enjoyable. I think it captured the relationships between players on a high school sport's team well (albeit in a slightly ridiculous fashion). It's funny when it needs to be and none of the actors are particularly bad. You'll find much better, but I think it's somewhat of a success as a commentary on how important being successful in high school sports actually is.

Liseli rugby filmi.

For some reason I rewatched this movie recently and it's one of the worst movies I've seen in my life. The acting (especially the accents) are an abortion. It's amazing that a movie that features Paul Walker would have an even more annoying character - but Billy Bob you suck ass. I literally asked myself what the hell I was doing with my life when watching this. That's how bad this movie is, it makes you question every life decision you've ever made. 1 point for the tits

An average film, which I guess passes for an above average high school movie, nowadays. I don't know...it's about teenagers. It's about sex. It's about football. It's about teenagers who have sex and play football. It's pretty entertaining at times. When it tries to achieve higher purpose, it feels forced.

After repeated viewings and finally coming to review this, I will say that Varsity Blues is not a film you can sit down and love in an instant. It's a teen drama, and you better leave it at that. Could have appreciated it a whole lot more if everything else tied together in this would've been stronger, especially the cast and script.

One of the better teen flicks from the late-90's that dominated the multiplexes on a weekly basis. This one has a lot of heart and some damn fine execution, especially a scene chewing Jon Voight as the villainous head coach. It also introduced the world to actors like Ali Larter, Paul Walker, and Amy Smart. If the ending of this film doesn't get you pumped up for something, then you just don't have adrenal glands.
