This could've easily devolved into the smug patronizing of oh, let's say every Jon Stewart project, but VENGEANCE is the rare How We Live Now movie that can laugh at itself. Sharp, witty, and unsparing, even if the big mystery is a bit of a head-scratcher.

It works better as a dark comedy than social commentary with several laugh out loud moments. I was able to forgive that it is tough to determine when the satire ends and the preachy characters are no longer supposed to be making you laugh. You can just take it as entertainment, but I think that this is one you will think about afterwards whether or not you enjoyed it.

This is one of the few movies I rated highly even though so much of it had elements I normally dislike. I don't know. I can't explain it. So much of this was legit (especially nearer to the end) that I guess it outweighed the earlier stuff I didn't care for. Ashton Kutcher (and his character) was great in this.

Novak's Vengeance plays Americana against a sardonic East Coast eye by employing stereotypes but not quite supplanting them to bring out the depth inherent in the characters & culture; depth very much being the theme of the film. Novak's direction is great, his writing sharp though edging into Woody Allen self-centrism & his performance solid; however Kutcher steals the film with his melancholic soliloquies. Aided by its soundtrack, the film has a vibe that keeps it engrossing throughout.

The writing is sufficient to make a comedy that's funny enough to be considered one, and a mystery that's mysterious enough to also be considered one. The performances and characters are also fine. There's enough heart here to get invested. I don't think there's anything amazing going on, but it's a solid almost 2 hours worth sinking the time into.
