A lonely bus stop, a trumpet-playing scout and a woman who refuses to pay him anything for his off-tune performance. This dryly humorous opening sets the tone for rest of the film which tells the story of Vic, a woman who has just been released from prison and who is on the hunt for some peace and quiet. This is the first Côté film that I've seen - his other films may be different - and to me it feels very much like a mix of the Dardenne brothers (the focus on people moving between places via roads and paths, the almost-perfect pacing, the constant potential for wrongdoing/doing what's right) and Yorgos Lanthimos (the menacing atmosphere that suffocates as opposed to shocks, the inevitable brutality). To be clear, Côté is not a derivative film maker, and this is his own tale of love and loss.

Although the disparate elements don't quite gel, this mysterious thriller/relationship drama seemed intriguing enough thanks to an unpredictable and pretty tense build-up but this is ultimately squandered in the pointlessly gruesome and tonally confused conclusion.

Not sure how to feel about that tonal shift. I guess I should have seen it coming but it just felt a little mean-spirited

Pretentious blend of quirky indie-drama and torture porn.
