A number of otherwise insignificant small-town stories erupt into drama when a gang of hoodlums decides to rob the local bank. A father looking for pride in his son's eyes, a timid clerk who is a peeping tom by night, a man striving to rewin his wife's love, an Amish farmer faced with viciousness, and a proper older woman turned thief, all find themselves entangled with the bank robbers as a peaceful weekend turns violent. Beautiful Cinemascope western/noir/heist movie let down by my crappy Twilight Time non-anamorphic DVD with laserdisc interlaced quality (issues fixed in blu-ray release). Nice slice of life from different members of the town who feel like they're stuck at a way of life there. The Amish guy didn't really make sense but at least he gets a cool pitchfork scene. Cool dad Victor Mature. Fav scene: hitting on the beautiful Virginia Leith at the bar.

"Violent Saturday" does a great job of building to the robbery. It gives us a glimpse of the characters and the planning for the job. It's after the robbery that the film loses steams.

BlurayRip RARBG.

For a 1950s crime caper this has a good script, although I wouldn't recommend it for action and thrills. Certain events do occur for dramatic effect rather than realism (the violence included), but the characters belie a bit of depth behind their broad brush strokes, and the dialogue has thought put into it. Ernest Borgnine is Amish, which suits him!

So...getting a child wounded instead of getting him out of danger by letting the criminals leave is heroic? What? But whoever framed these shots, I like 'em. Could've been a little longer for all I care.
