An impressively assured and ambitious directorial (and writing) triumph for Bateman gets vividly and uncomfortably inside the head and thought processes of Munn’s depressive, anxiety ridden lead – hits the nail so savagely on the head that it should come with a trigger warning for any real life sufferers! Terrifically cast right down the line, with Theroux’s smarmy and sinister voice-only of “the committee” a particular standout; even manages to offer a sliver of hope and conquest at the finale.

Violet relentlessly addresses the mental destruction caused by self-hatred and social anxiety. Justine Bateman conveys the chaos that this situation reflects on business life and human relations in an impressive and interesting way. Excellent character work, great film.

This is a unique take on the tortured inner-workings of a dramatic lead. There is a rainbow of emotions and personal obstacles to overcome. The Hollywood backdrop keeps you at arms length, but there is plenty to relate to. Munn isn't the best fit, but she does a good job.
