Viridiana has all the familiar Bunuel themes: frustrated lust, religious mockery, foot fetishism, contempt for humanity. Contempt in spades, I would say -- the film is a particularly bitter pill to swallow. Wickedly funny, deeply cynical, expertly filmed and wholly engrossing. Pinal and Rey are marvelous, as is the troupe of beggars.

Definitely a weird one. This is my first Bunuel film and I want to see more of his works because of how this film is presented. It is expertly shot, and really does an incredible job of sucking you into the atmosphere. It's definitely hard to appreciate, but at the end you just get a sense of concern and question, and you will explore your mind to find out what you just saw. Great Film.

Bunuel's most realized vision. Between the flaming crown of thorns, the Beggar's Banquet, a psycho-pseudo-rape, and a game of tute (that's analogous with a threesome, fyi), Bunuel assaults the audience until God seems but a distant memory. God bless Bunuel.

The first act is amazing! Cinema at its finest. My jaw dropped at the perfection of every shot. Unfortunately, I found the large section with the destitutes unsatisfying. The character of Jorge was funny, as was the resolution of his storyline at the end of the film.

Man, this was my first Buñuel and it's audacity was really amazing. Even without getting all the religious references there's a great mix of story, social commentary and imagery that makes it a wonderful film.

Buñuel is an uneven director. He is often crude and superficial, but when he works with subtlety he achieves really great accomplishments, like Viridiana. He works with his favorite themes here of religion, lust and social class, but avoids clear-cut messages or allegories, instead creating something complex, with an ever-changing mood, unusual but not blatantly surreal. The dirtiest and most brutish characters (from the wealthy uncle to the street bums) are oddly the most sympathetic.

"Virdiana" packs intriguing themes and some memorable sequences but, as a whole, feels sort of dry. Although rarely boring, it isn't until the final 30' or so (the erratic Beggar's Banquet) that it truly reaches its potential -the rest of the film, curious and amusing as it may be, doesn't seem to have any particular drive. That said, the ecstatic pessimism of the ending and the sharp religious/social satire (which, unfortunately, emerges too late) are examples of Buñuel at his cynical best.

An absolutely devastating film. Its depiction of humanity's simultaneous capacities for mischief and compassion felt so truthful. I'd call it darkly humanist rather than nihilist.

Another dark and slightly surreal tale from Buñuel, and yet it doesn't leave you feeling too terrible. Maybe it's the dark humor scattered throughout, or the wonderful acting, or the feeling that this isn't just a cynical tale of a woman's downfall, but a sobering look at both the greatness and the faults of humanity. After all, we always do tend to take things too far. Either way, it's wonderful, and the beggar's banquet sequence is amazing.

Pretty powerful after the film ends, but the film itself didn't really thrill me, the same goes for its ambiguous characters. "Virdiana" is far from bad, but compare it to "Winter Light" (both address the quarrelsome subject of religion), and you'll see which one works better. Same thing happened with Murnau ("Sunrise: A Song..."): pretentiousness (does not equal) masterful !!!

A terrific premise stretched out in length. This should've been about an hour shorter if it wanted to execute its theme better.

A hilariously wicked masterpiece with hauntingly beautiful cinematography. Only the master of blasphemy would dare depict a nun milking a cow with such erotic overtones - and that's just the beginning.

I just loved the contrast between Viridiana and his other late masterpieces. Take that discreet charm and playfulness out of the picture, Bunuel is no less serious and brutal than Bergman.

A symphony of mischief and malevolence, an ode to Judas and Sodom, a funeral eulogy to everything that is sacred and innocent. Bunuel's devilish work never intends for you to feel pity or false superiority, it you wants down there where you belong, deep in the mud with all the of others. Hallelujlah!

very well done as it stands, although not without familiarity. now, it is perhaps possible to view the final scenes as a warning about the dangers of naïve idealism, or maybe even as a playful "fuck the bourgeoisie" romp, but really, one must wonder about the putative sympathies of these putative leftists when they present the homeless as a bunch of unruly thugs.

Sadece dinin dogrularinin simdiki hayatimizda etkisini, degerini kaybettigini, yillar gectikce saf olan seyin yozlastigini ve toplumun icinde bir 'bug' olarak yer buldugunun altini cizen bir film. Viewed September 6, 2021. Luis Bunuel's slow unraveling of his protagonist's beliefs is a marvel to behold. Key to its success, his portrayal of her religious purity and sincere belief is as vivid as his vision of decadence, prurience and decay (bodily decay, societal decay, etc.). You can feel the tension, the flailing to reconcile what you've been taught with all of the darkness, sadness and selfishness that you find out in the world.

Hilarious at times and brutal at others. Viridiana is an engaging piece all together. It's beautiful to look at, and the framing of the shots are right on the dot, the film looks like it should be placed into a frame (especially the mocking Last Supper) most of the characters are detestable, sans the protagonist Viridiana, while at the same time possessing likable traits. A very human and challenging film with deep religious themes.

Interesting take on Sleeping Beauty, in which Bunuel takes his sledgehammer of misanthropy to a fairy tale, shattering it by presenting Viridiana as a delicate flower to be torn apart by religion, her family and even those she seeks to aid, all the while unaware of what actually goes on.

Irreverent, audacious and wonderfully cynical. I'm glad I was familiar with Bunuel's work prior to seeing this, because otherwise I think most of the subtle mischief on display would have flown over my head. But going in understanding Bunuel's darkly humorous sense of irony, the little jabs at religious idealism and human nature were a joy. I think knowing where the film is ultimately headed will help me appreciate and enjoy this even more, so a second viewing is absolutely essential for me.

Interesting and deeply skeptical look at religion and charity. The first half or so, involving the storyline with the uncle, is unsettling and I believe the better half of the film. Might improve on second viewing, and I would like to see it at some point with commentary. An interesting experience.

Sharp and incisive in its critique of the church, and really of all humanity, Bunuel's complete cynicism is difficult to swallow. The film gets points for its exquisite visual sensibility, but his refusal to give Viridiana even the slightest modicum of respect strikes me as a rather shallow look at the devotion of people.

Beautiful direction as usual from Buñuel, but his social commentary is awkward. He tries to punch in all directions, but end up punching mostly down. He gives excuses to the bourgeois, while depicting the paupers as a mean mob, without any context. Also, sexism. Still, the depiction of the fierce conflict between idealism and real life is good.

Much like The Virgin Spring, another religiously themed 1961 masterpiece, Viridiana's journey is portrayed so gracefully that when we face incredibly powerful, uncomfortable or enigmatic moments, we haven't even seen them coming, and when we have, they've already pounced on us. With every quality of every production specialty, the effect is sheer simplicity, no instability despite whatever viciousness or emotional tremors, making them all that much more inherently poignant.
