What a fantastic conceit: as a medical student with amnesia conducts his first autopsy, the more he cuts, the more he remembers of his past life, and perhaps, love. What could possibly go wrong? The acting is top notch, sure, thanks to Tsukamoto's Kaijyu troupe, and elevates the material. But it's the elliptical editing, perhaps hinting at the ephemeral nature of memory and identity, that takes this to the next level.

A strange and tender tale of love and healing. The film is a bit too slow and sterile but well acted. The dream sequences are where the film and the characters come alive. Vital reminded me of Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain in a lot of ways.

I never would have thought a dissection scene could somehow be so tender and intimate. The dance scenes are also intense and surreal and very emotional.
