No doubt this was an inventive, quasi-avantgarde approach in 1920; so much so that the film was barely released and faded into obscurity until being rediscovered in Japan in the 1950's. Martin's roots in theatre produce a 'stageyness' that works because the wonky shapes and lines provide much visual interest for those inclined. The use of white paint to heighten the artificiality of the sets and props is also unique. A new transfer and an actual score might improve the overall impression.

Lots of wacky dream-like sets. It's almost as though somebody dared them to come up with something even more far out than Dr Caligari (and they went right out and did it). The story--such as it is--never really seems to amount to much though; and then there's the matter of the godawful lame Symbolic Ending.
