Didn't affect me as much as I had hoped, even though I think Noé is one of our most daring contemporary filmmakers. The film's split screen gimmick is both its virtue and, to a certain extent, its downfall, both original and inconsistent in its use. It shows us the slow deterioration of a couple's mind and health, but their journey remains devoid of any kind of inner, self-reflective dimension. The subplot also adds little and I could've gone without the pseudo-intellectual BS about film

For all the drugs in the film it’s a sober work. It knows its mission: sometimes meta, often meandering, but there’s a quiet, menacing, everyday brutality that’s hard to shake. The desolation in Françoise Lebrun‘s performance carries the film, in moments grasping for agency but then retreating into a childlike fear of the valley of the shadow of death. On that, this is one of a handful of films that deals directly with death but sees no redemptive purpose in our end - life as a dream and a void.

The A/C in the cinema I viewed this in was out of order and it made what was already a claustrophobic and exhausting atmosphere all the more oppressive. It is a film about death. About death as the final individuation -- Noe films the stage of true finite hopelessness in all of its futility. Similar to when Lynch did "The Straight Story" this doesn't provide the usual Noé shock, but in its own silent way is as brutal a depiction of human life as any of his films.

The vortex of entropy brings collapse at every scale from the infinitely small to the infinitely large: psychic, familial, social, cosmic. The split screen emphasises the separation of worlds, a bit like Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, perhaps: not that warmth and bonds are totally absent, just constricted by limits, and where all of the memorial artifacts of a shared domestic hearth (books, posters, etc.) function both to enrich existence and as a way of not knowing the unknowable one knows is coming.

Convincing performances in a surprisingly subdued drama from Noé.

While “Vortex” has its flaws, Gaspar Noé’s unique filmmaking style and the powerful performances from the cast make it a worthwhile watch. Fans of Noé’s previous work will find much to appreciate in this film, as will anyone who is interested in the subject matter of aging and dementia.

A movie like this is always going to be in the shadow of Amour. I enjoyed the formal experiment though.

Apparently Gaspar ran out of acid.
