The first part of Bondarchuk's masterpiece is overwhelming but kind-of-sort-of a mess. I think it probably helped me quite a bit to have read the novel. I really like the casting by the way.

This film series begins a little unfortunately with a dramatically confused opening chapter in which some of the actors appear too old and their makeup seems disconcertingly obvious (the latter problem will be mostly ironed out in the subsequent chapters, and the age of the actors will seem less important), but the presentation of the Battle of Austerlitz is a successful indication of the scale of things to come. Despite the somewhat offputting opening, it is worth persisting.
