The traditional patriarch losing his grip on his woman and child as times change serves as the central axis of this film, and yet different themes and focus points shift throughout, sometimes via highly dramatic plot turns. It's not a deliberately subversive film, but the way in which it reflects family values and norms isn't perfectly obedient either. It problematizes its protagonist, achieving something layered and thought-provoking.
