Waiting to Exhale

Pretty underrated chick flick. Wonder why.

It's not really fair to write an ensemble film and then cast Angela Bassett as one of the ensemble members, because of course she is going to completely outshine everyone else in the film. Kinda boring but occasionally interesting, especially whenever Bassett is on screen.

An easy and fun watch

Almost as boring as the soundtrack.

God I could watch movies like this all day, black female-driven melodrama at its very finest. Nothing is more pleasurable than sexual empowerment stories and hating on asshole men and white bitches. Angela Bassett's meltdown is epic: "I give you 11 fucking years of my life and you're telling me you're leaving me for a WHITE BITCH????"

It's adapted from a very successful book, and it feels adapted from a bigger, richer source. The plot jumps around in odd ways ... characters appear and disappear without much rhyme or reason. It feels like the highlights have been correctly identified, but the inessentials parts were just chopped out without smoothing the ragged edges. It probably wouldn't bother anyone who loved this kind of thing, but it bothered me.
