I don't wanna say it's a romantic comedy because that would slightly demean it and it's mostly devoid of "romance" anyway. Russell does a great job portraying an exasperated woman with an unwanted baby on the way. I really enjoyed her twisted "mother/son" relationship with her awful husband (loved his slow honking), which is a fresh angle to take and kept him from being a completely stereotypical abuser. The ending was a little on the hokey side, but I grew so invested in Russell, I didn't mind.

Another pretty mediocre "quirky independent comedy." It starts out alright - the characters are amusing but not all that likeable. But the film really turns on the maudlin sentimentality in the second half, which means the amusing unlikeable characters become tedious and trite caricatures.

An undercurrent of sadness runs through the film and manages to pierce even the happiest moments. It is never about how easy life is but often about what you'll take in this life for better or worse. To ease your woes it does manage to end as happily as possible.

Surprisingly good. The movie, despite its bitter, world-weary crust, is quite sweet and affecting at the core -- made bittersweet by the true-life horror that befell Shelly before the film's release. My knowledge of her death hung a pall over the movie, made all the more tragic by just how strong a piece of work it really is. The comedy is nuanced, and the characters are all alluring, even when they aren't likable. Griffith and Jemison shine in bit parts, and Russell knocks it out of the park.

A "romantic comedy" (if it can be called that) that actually has something more to offer than letting the viewer turn his or her brain off for 2 hours and stare at the screen in a dopey, mildly entertained stupor. It's quirky in a good way and I loved the dialogue between the waitresses. Not quite sure I get the diva moment at the end and I think the mean husband could have been a bit meaner, but those are my only complaints. I liked it and would definitely watch it again.

I am not a huge pie fan, but the movie itself wasn't bad. The interaction between Russell and Hines at times could be pretty funny. Russell's character at times started to annoy me a bit, but that once again could just be that I am not a big pie fan. It is good to see that Felicity has graduated from RA status and found work at a diner.

So disappointing. It's not that it was a terribly-made film, but I did not like the story at all and found there was very little sweetness, sass or deliciousness. Winner of my "Worst Movie of the Year" award.

Waitress is unique in that it is an incredibly sad film, but the viewer is constantly distracted from that fact just as Keri Russel's character distracts herself from her own sadness. Much of the film is frustrating, because the small town problems don't seem like they would be so hard to deal with in reality, but fine acting and a fun recurring pie-inventing gimmick are sweet plot carriers. Above all, it's worth seeing for Andy Griffith's performance. Meh!

I'm torn on this.. It's clearly a "chick-flick", although I dislike that label. The first half is cute and quirky, with sad undertones, and that's quite alright. The second half however basks in sentimental sap, which is offsetting. In addition it has some very misguided music (Imperial March? Really?), and the end is not at all satisfying. The downsides are somewhat offset by my love for Nathan FIllion, and my love for characters talking about pie. "Meh" is a suitable term.

Considering my gender, I enjoyed this movie way more than I probably should have. I don`t think that I was its intended audience, but that didn't seem to matter. What can I say? I thought it was hilarious and appropriately sentimental. Like a sap, I bought into the whole thing. Just a great little movie.

When you watch Waitress, you're also watching a meta-movie about Shelly's brutal end, and the spirit that bursts from every corner of this overcrowded movie is so genuinely warm that trashing it feels like panning a so-so baton-twirling performance at the church talent show.

Waitress is interesting in that it hops between clichéd RomCom territory with Russell, Hines and Fillion, and full-on drama involving spousal abuse with Sisto. The result is a decent film that is neither as jarring nor as entertaining as one would imagine. Sisto steals the scenes he's in, portraying both meekness and foreboding. The pie motif is pretty clever; credit to the late Adrienne Shelly, who also provides some adorkable character comedy. The ending was a touch too dreamlike for my taste

Because it's a story of a woman suffering unfathomable abuse from an evil man, it's hard to look at this film without thinking about the tragic end of Adrian Shelly's life. But that misses the wonderful things she did as a filmmaker. Like Juno, it takes a character's pregnancy and turns it into a modern fairy tale. It also has a fantastic mood, thanks to the dreamlike storytelling, voiceover narration, and Keri Russell's performance. Overall, it's a great deal of fun that earns its sweet ending.

This is a very sweet little comedy reminiscent of "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (the 70's movie that spawned the TV sitcom "Alice"). However if you watched both movies, one after the other, you would find that Waitress blows Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore out of the water! You won't find a lot of slapstick in this one, cheap gags, or outlandish situations. Instead, you'll find a tight storyline and script with razor-sharp subtle humor.

It was cute. But it was also kind of sad under all of the cuteness, which started out interesting and made this something different, but by the second half it was just a bit too full of sappy sentimentality. It's a good movie I guess, but probably not something I'll be telling people they have to see.

Saw this with my mom, not sure why. I have a crush on Keri Russell, and I'm a big fan of Firefly and consequently Nathan Fillion. Those things definitely upped my enjoyment. Solid enough romantic comedy, probably a bit too saccharine and sentimental at parts, but good overall. Plus, I like pie.

It has some endearing low-rent weirdness that recalls the work of director Hal Hartley, with whom Shelly notably worked at the beginning of her acting career. That weirdness has been tempered, though, leaving it sitcom safe and approachable. There are few real surprises and little that's challenging. Russell does fine work as the expert pie-maker and titular server, playing the role with a barbed impatience that is refreshing in its unvarnished petulance.

I'm not one to speak ill of the dead but, this was a well written movie that was poorly directed. Actress/Writer/Director Adrienne Shelly should have let someone else direct her movie. She built the blueprint for a fine film but, she decided to do the construction herself and, had it been left to an expert, it could have been a really wonderful movie. Instead, it's over-the-top (not in a good way) and feels like jumbled incomplete mess.

While the husband is portrayed as a one-dimensional cretin, Keri Russell's passive-aggressive response to him stealthily flies below the radar. I don't really have any sympathy for the guy, but I don't think this film is as emotionally observant as it would like to be.

Subtle and not laugh-out-loud funny, but a gentle, round-a-boutly heartwarming tale of being trapped in a life you don't want and how you deal with it and attempt to escape. When domestic abuse is played for dark humor, the story is akin to horror comedy. Not to mention all the other moral gems this movie offers. Obsessive stalker makes a girl fall in love by wearing down her defenses… Literally every married character was having an affair in a town populated by what seems to be about 500 residents. But the ending worked brilliantly and contrasted the otherwise bleak and surreal tone.
