Fielding Pierce lives the life of an aspiring politician - in 1972 he's serving in the Coast Guard (trying to avoid Vietnam in the most honorable way), and by 1973 he has entered law school. Along the way he falls in love with Sarah, a fiercely idealistic woman who devotes her life to helping others - unfortunately she's killed in an explosion while assisting members of the Chilean resistance. Nine years later, in the middle of a congressional election, Fielding is suddenly flooded with thoughts and visions of his lost love. (imdb)

A really strong movie about longing and compromise, and how not being able to let go of the past can cripple your present and future. All of the leads are fantastic, Crudup, Connelly, and Molly Parker.

Tedious, drawn out, uneventful yet not without great performances from the leads.

I liked it. Sure, it was unabashedly romantic, and perhaps too insistent on its theme of choosing between a personally satisfying life versus a civically responsibile one, but on the whole I thought it worked. Crudup and Connelly have fantastic chemistry.

An intriguing - partly overly insistent instead of intense - story about the impact of love, personal choices, passion, ambition and political beliefs; both leads are superb and contribute strongly to the haunting atmosphere, underbuild from cinematography and score. Could have done without the obtrusive monologue at the end though - that explains what we've ambiguously seen through the film - and instead trusted the audience more wholeheartedly. *Preview*: #13#, story, reviews, Jennifer.C/9
