Walking Back

1928
Drama
Jazz age youngster Smoke Thatcher "borrows" a neighbor's car to take Patsy, his sweetheart, to a dance after his father refuses to lend him his car. A car-fight with a rival results in the borrowed automobile's being so wrecked that Smoke cannot return it. The garage to which he and Patsy take the car for repair turns out to be actually a gang's hideaway and a place where stolen cars are brought and later fenced.

On the surface Walking Back (1928) is a fairly pointless silent film. It's all about a guy who borrows a car to go to the dance. Regardless of a lackluster idea, there is such a vibrant feel to this. Apart from the loose 1920s atmosphere, there is a brilliantly awesome fight! No, not with fists. A CAR FIGHT! Yup, they kept crashing their cars as if it was a street fight! Pure silent anarchy! The rest is fairly routine and silly, but this works nicely for a fun time away from anything meaningful.
