Recruits head to the front lines towards the close of the Korean War. The interaction between two of the soldiers...an idealistic newcomer and a psychotic who goes on one-man patrols slitting enemy throats under cover of night...and the orphan boy who comes between them is examined. Melancholy, ahead-of-its-time thriller. Strong premonitions of Platoon, and an incredible cast. Tom Skerritt steals the show in a relatively minor role. Lots of evocative sets playing off the low budget.

Intriguing war drama is hurt and undermined by its clear budgetary limitations, and some murky, unfocused story telling, but serves as a fascinating time capsule to mark the first meeting of Redford and Pollack (who are both excellent), and also spotlights a wonderfully creepy performance from Saxon as an enigmatically ruthless soldier.

Interesting and kind of entertaining. Lots of familiar, very young, faces.

An interesting war movie that suffers from a poor soundtrack and uninspiring cinematography.

The National Board of Review picked this as one of their Top 10 of 1962, the biggest reason I sought it out. It's an understandable choice: a fable about a psychopathic maverick soldier in Korea, the war orphan under his care, and the novice soldier who butts heads with him. But the script is too shallow for the film to pack its intended punch, although Denis Sander's direction is fine, Robert Redford (the novice) makes a good debut, and John Saxon is intriguing as the anti-hero.
