A civil war in Africa. After her village is burned down by rebels and her parents are killed, Komona is forced into the jungle as a child soldier. Her brutal commander not only trains her in the use of arms but also orders her to sleep with him. Searching for shelter amidst the horror, she turns to a slightly older boy with white hair who she calls 'Magician' and falls in love with. (mubi.com)

An orientalist misery porn to make westerners feel better about themselves. Good performance by the girl, though...

Top badass moment? Realising that there are some films that are just too sad and close to the truth to take the piss out of. This is one of them. Which doesn’t leave me with a lot else to say. It did remind me of Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure in a strange way though; with its protagonist's five minutes of happiness in a life that was otherwise mostly miserable. Well at least the weather was generally nice and sunny. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Rachel Mwanza's naturalistic performance anchors this moving and sobering lament on the horrors of meaningless war with specific emphasis on the lasting damage it inflicts on children.

A bit boring and predictable, even with the supernatural elements.

It has a very moving story, even if the acting is only okay and the main character is dull and not the most likable of protagonists. I like the writing and the character development, but while the actress who plays Komona has been praised, I found her performance lacking. It's good, but not great, and I'll be really surprised if this one takes the Oscar for best foreign language film (which interestingly is based on a real story from Burma, but set in Africa, and is actually a Canadian film).

felt more and more trite the more its narrative arc, concerning the tentative blossoming of a child soldier's love and hope in the ghostly shadow of a non-descript era of afro-brutality, revealed itself. something to do with all that dehumanisation-of-war bluntness hammered into the script, transparently trying to subvert its inherent melodrama.

Not really heavy enough for its subject material, seeming to float off on tangents from time to time. It becomes tedious early on, and ends up being average.

Edges near plight porn, but thankfully avoids any overt sentimentality. The simplicity of the dialogue belies a number of powerful elements such as the convincing ubiquity of superstition. Good music.

A documentary on the subject would have been better.
