Although the lightweight mood makes "War On Everyone" relatively easy to watch and Caleb Landry Jones provides an amusing performance, this is such a miss. Its biggest offense is that it never really becomes funny, instead emerging as a try-hard film constantly striving to sound snappy and witty but ending up pedestrian and basic, while any perceived attempt at satire is buried underneath the lazy script and negated by the gratingly lighthearted use and abuse of weighty, tricky subject matter.

Disappointing, but still decent. McDonagh is out of his comfort zone and it shows everywhere.

"That must have been fun to film," I thought, stony-faced, as another bit of quirky dialogue with the exact same cadence as the previous 400 started playing out. J. M. McDonagh's Irish characters come off as witty and melancholic; his American characters are just ill-defined assholes. For most of the film, here's exactly one joke per scene: isn't it funny that *this* character would be talking about *this* subject, at *this* moment? Frequently, it isn't.

Juvenile, in an adorable sort of way. It's a buddy cop dark comedy with great characters. I'm not sure if it had a plot, and I didn't care.

Imagine a film that threw together Anglo-Irish stereotypes of American culture, including Americans' expectations of of what Irish and English are like. Then use that to make a satire on buddy-cop movies. That's what this is.

This is such a disappointment from a director that provided two previous works that were thoroughly enjoyable. War on Everyone is the opposite of enjoyable. It is hateful, racist, homophobic, depressing, and then, on top of all of that, it throws in a bit of child pornography right at the end. Like a little garnish. The problems begin and end with the dreadful screenplay, but the whole project is a mess. I suppose Pena and Skarsgard are having a good time, but I doubt the rest of us are.
