Imagine the pitch meeting: "It's not just an underdog sports story -- it's a DOUBLE underdog sports story!" . . . "I dunno. Where's the sentiment?" . . . "They're brothers!" . . . "Gonna need more" . . . "Their estranged father is the grizzled trainer!" . . . "More" . . . "One of them's a war hero!" . . . "More" . . . "The other's a public school teacher that can't pay his mortgage!" . . . "More" . . . "The war hero sends money to his dead friend's wife!" . . . You get the picture.

Although predictable at times, Warrior is still a solid fight drama. Nolte, Brady and Edgerton all have good performances and O'Connor's direction shines in both brutal fight sequences and capturing the drama. Sure it's chock-full of typical Hollywood flair, but solid nonetheless.

Tom Hardy & Joel Edgerton were both amazing. Nick Nolte pours his heart out in this. All of the supporting cast was excellent across the board. Realistic & interesting fights. The personal & family drama was complex & nearly as good as the action in the ring. There was a great build up for the characters that made it easy to feel invested. Good film quality & music. Unlikely plot. Effective editing builds the excitement. Kudo's to Gavin O'Connor for impressive and effective directing & writing.

This film is insanely predictable and very cheesy. And I loved every minute of it. The acting is great - Hardy is nearing the top of my personal favorites. The fighting scenes are probably the best ever and I was heavily emotionally invested in all of Brendan's fights. The melodrama goes too far, but it is excusable.

Another entry in the vast array of underdog stories, that must've felt flimsy on paper yet excels in its execution. While the heartpoundimg fight scenes are in firm contrast with the more composed moments of its first hour, they pack a significant punch, as it's not about the destination but the ride getting there. Add some fine performances and Isham's rousing score, and you've got one most enjoyable films of the year. Hardy is a beast.

Everyone has issues. We get it. 'Warrior' wants to be an emotional knockout as well as a visceral fighter movie. I bought the characters, the performances of the actors, and the intensity of the MMA tournament. I did not, however, get wrapped up in the relational drama of the characters, nor the dynamism of the brothers' polarized existence to each other leading up to a bloody duel in the cage---a tad too contrived. That said, the movie still won the rounds without knocking me out.

you know what you're in for when the national starts playing over an audiobook of moby dick. this well acted old-school sports melodrama swims in macho clichés, contrivances and self-serious portent, but it's all in service of building anticipation for the exhilarating hour long climactic tournament where various festering animosities are settled in the cage. exceeded my modest expectations as a cinephile, but DEFINITELY as a shameless sports fanatic. kurt angle cameos as (basically) fedor.

This is far better than it has any right to be thanks to an excellent script and a unique power dynamic - brother vs brother is nothing new, but the movie presents them as equals and doesn't manipulate the audience into favouring either one. Nolte and Hardy were brilliant, while Edgerton was more generic, much like his character to be honest. Fight scenes were filmed excellently and looked brutal.

The underdog sports story is older than the Bible and I couldn't care less about MMA. Additionally, the comparisons to last year's 'The Fighter' are unavoidable (brothers, addiction, fighting, etc). Yet somehow, despite all the genre cliches and sentimental predictability, the story of these brothers and their tormented father (an incredible Nolte) captivated me right up to the ending that I already knew was coming. Like 'The Fighter,' it's the strong performances that makes this compelling.

Stop the ship! In so many ways everything that 'The Fighter' should have been. Double up on the underdog story, twice the acting from the lead character(s), a much more violent sport, hell, you even get the best bits of 'Rocky 4' thrown in there for free. Okay, so it's twice as predictable, but still infinitely more likable, mostly thanks to Tom Hardy, cementing why he's the only true 'Bane' candidate out there.

Bad Rocky knock-off with characterisations straight out of CSI Miami. By the end it's unintentionally hilarious in its hysterical determination to grip you by any means possible which here, because of the writers' complete lack of imagination, means we have a series of cliches from start to finish topped off with a laughable finale. Warrior makes all the Rocky films (including the really daft one set in Russia) seem like masterpieces of gritty realism and understatement.

This is a great movie (coming from a non-MMA fan). Hardy, Nolte, and Edgerton work so well together and manage to completely embody their subtlety different characters. The movie is nearly 2 hours and 20 minutes, but I was so absorbed I only noticed because I have a tiny bladder. Besides a cliched wife character and the terrible announcers in the final tournament (easily forgivable/ignorable minor flaws) I don't know how this movie could have been better. See it now.

First of all, Hardy looks like he could beat the crap out of anyone! Warrior is one of the few really good "fight movies" ever made, but sadly it takes the sentimental turn at the end, which I personally could have done without. The real tip on the hat goes out to Nolte who gives a great performance as the once drunken dad, who just want's to be forgiven and be with both his sons again!

This isn't a filmmaker's movie, this is an actor's movie and it is a damn good one. While the plot is fairly cookie-cutter it tells its story in a different way and Tom Hardy is remarkable. It is surprisingly emotionally engaging and I often found myself reacting physically (a sign of greatness on some level in my book). I really cared for both main characters and, without spoiling anything, it doesn't provide a simple feel-good ending. The outcome of some of the fights is hard to believe

If I were to sit you down and outline the plot of this film from start to finish, you would laugh in my face. It is so overwrought with melodrama and cliché, and should be a horrible disaster. But it works. It all works. The performances are uniformly excellent (particularly from Nolte and Hardy), and the fight scenes are thrilling. I hate MMA, but I loved this movie. This film manages to power through cliche and predictability on the backs of extremely solid performances from Nolte, Hardy and Edgerton to be consistently gripping and moving throughout. It is also a film with an unimpressed opinion of the American war machine and the uncaring apathy of the capitalist system. It's similar to the Korean film Crying Fist, which is also about two sympathetic characters inevitably facing off in a bid for their respective salvations. Both highly recommended.

Good, but maybe a tad overrated. It really oversimplifies the sport of MMA, but I guess this movie's not really about fighting is it? It's about a hugely dysfunctional family. So dysfunctional, in fact, that they barely share the screen together. These are extremely flawed people, but you cheer for them based on the moments in which they share their good intentions.

O'Connor's nicely done MMA film plays by the rules of other emotional sports dramas, and I thought it would be completely blunt, but, wow, this one really works. Warrior has the broken soul soul of a flawed father (Nolte is immense), the desperate spirit of a family man and the strenght of a soldier: among the clashes set in the cage and in the hearts of these three men, there is an intense dispute of mixed feelings, violent conflicts and delayed talks. Good surprise.

Watching the trailer I expected a very cliché movie. It still has some clichés like almost every other sportsfilm or family-centered film has, but that didn't bother me at all. And that's all thanks to Tom Hardy who portrays a badass fighting machine with emotional problems and his so called brother Joel Edgerton who puts down a very sympathetic character. Because of the use of shaky and very close shots it feels you are in the cage with the figthers. One of my favorites of 2011!

Ultimately very simple. I could only watch this by skipping certain fights; especially the inconsistency in the duration of fight scenes makes it very confusing, unrealistic and stupid all the while making a mess of the feeling of suspense. Bar the ex-soldier guff in Hardy's character's backstory, the gritty drama in this urban MMA tale works. As does the crowd-pleasing, unashamedly-cliché fighting/tournament stuff we've seen a million times before in various boxing & martial arts flicks. But for a number of reasons these two facets fail to meld together well, meaning we're left with the predictable sibling face-off and you honestly couldn't give two hoots who wins or who loses. And after two hours, that just aint enough.

Nolte, Edgerton, and Hardy all turn out substantial performances, the cinematography and editing create a consistent tone, and the script is believable and emotive. It's a long series of sports movie conventions, including the dreaded training montage. So why is it so freaking good? Because the characters are human, the motivations are real, the back stories are interesting, the fight scenes are authentic, and the performances are perfect. The characters' stories weren't merely filler between fights - I cared, I was moved. O'Connor manages to make the genre cliches seem fresh, always utilizing them well. Contrivances aside (the military stuff in particular could've been left out), this is everything you'd want in a fight movie. The characters are fully fleshed-out, with real motivations, emotions, and relationships - the complexity of which provides the film with its most tense undercurrent. It earns every bit of its drama by putting a human face on the figures bludgeoning each other in the climactic sequences. My only real complaint is that the (relatively) happy ending feels slightly false.

Warrior takes the sports pic clichés but completely underplays them. There's no joyful reunion scene between sons and fathers, nor is there a great celebratory scene towards the end. What could've been a predictable face-off between the leads was played down and came off as much more believable. It gets most emotional in a shot of Hardy's face that lasts but a few seconds in between rounds during the last fight. For some reason, the drama doesn't click for me. Fantastic performances in a story that has been told a million times before. It's entertaining and never outstays its welcome but the way the subplot of Tommy's time in the army is explored is awkward and poorly executed. I don't find the loose ends jarring. The plot, the acting, the score, it all comes together so well, and no matter how predictable the whole thing may appear, you will still have your breath taken away. The fight scenes are great too. Overall, this has been one of my favourite films of recent years. Well and truly worth your time!

Edgerton and the freakishly big machine that is Hardy crowned with an oscar worthy performance by Nolte gives you one hell of a movie. A movie about brotherhood, broken homes, broken promises and never giving up.

Routine wrestling (read: boxing) drama is marked by a devastating performance by Nolte as broken down father looking for redemption, which ranks with the finest performances he has ever given. Edgerton and Hardy both fine in the lead, but by keeping their characters seperated until almost the end, the film misses the opportunity to bring real fire to the climactic bout. Doesn't help that last year's THE FIGHTER covered similar territory far more successfully.

Some great acting (especially considering the dialogue), decent direction and of course awesome fight scenes elevate a rather sloppy, predictable script (was this first draft or what?) into a surprisingly entertaining film. Forget that it tries to be serious, and just watch it as a dumb but rather fun fight film. And why didn't Brian Callen just comment the entire film?

Overly dramatic

You know what the ending is, more or less, 20 minutes in to the movie. Good performances all around but suffers from trying to have too much plot for the amount of movie. That said, I think I might start watching MMA at some point...

Rocky for nothing-is-simple-anymore-times. Here Balboa is without his darker-but-we-like-them-anyway parts, which are now given to a Mr.T or a Drago-type killing machine thus making him more likeable. So deep down you root for the good guy in dire need but torn apart because you also don't want the other guy lose, because he is not that bad either, only avictim of circumstances, but also you know that he won't and shouldn't. A disgustingly preachy message indeed.

Damn, this movie is awesome. Gripping like Rocky and dramatic like Raging Bull. In my mind even better than "The Fighter". A must see and maybe one of 2011 best Hollywood flicks.

Too contrived to take it seriously.
