A beautiful film, this is a rich exploration of the mix of religious tradition and colonialism, and its consequences on certain classes of women. The romantic melodrama, which is instrumental to the plot, seems a little out of place, and it is this element where the director takes the most risks in her film. This is in contrast to the risks in filmmaking that she took -- her life was threatened and sets destroyed by fundamentalists the first time she tried to make the movie.

A very powerful film that highlights a situation that most people, myself included, probably don't know about. Yes it's Indian (at least partly) but its not the usual bollywood crap. Well worth a look.

Unbelievable story based on true events in India. I could not believe that women are so discriminated in this country. It's a very slow but good movie. I was astonished that in 2001 : 34 million women (widows) are in fact considered as lost for the society.

Better than the usual garbage but still not nearly as hard-hitting as it could be.

"Unjustly victim to the same religious system to which the main character is faithful, her confines are a strange necessity to her as is the water to the lilies." - Sara Schieron

Nominated for an Oscar, but if there's any justice in the world, its reputation will only grow in the future.

this was a surprisingly emotive film. it was shot beautifully, but in terms of plot/character it was somewhat lacking. having said this though, the film did a wonderful job of capturing certain moments of deep emotion. the film also excelled thematically with a message that rings true even in today's southern asia, which is a near-impossible feat given that the film achieved its theme with almost no help from plot or character.

Ugh. Almost made it through the first hour, but that was enough for me. A lot of the dialogue was hard to understand: "What did she say? Was it English?"; on many occasions none of us could tell. As I find with many such films, a documentary on Indian child brides, the history, the religion, the laws, the impact, would be interesting, but this dramatized version was not. Not at all.

A beautiful look into India culture in the 1930's and the fight between traditional and new thinking. The love side plot does slightly hurt the film but is important to the plot so it doesn't feel unnecessary, just a means to convey a message and feeling, not a means to tell a story.

Svag fyra.
