WATER FOR MAYA is a hand-painted work which came into being during a film interview with Martina Kudlacek about Maya Deren. There was a sudden recognition of Maya's intrinsic love of water and thus of all Mayan liquidity in magic conjunction, reflection, etc. (coolidge.org)

Like a lot of his other hand-painted works, this is like viewing hundreds of Jackson Pollock paintings within a span of 2 minutes. If you like Jackson Pollock, you will like this. I think Jackson Pollock mostly sucks, personally, but Stan Brakhage is better. Still, I prefer his more hypnotic and illusory works, like Black Ice or Comingled Containers.

Pretty reiterative of Brakhage, and I don't see how something like this is supposed to be a tribute to someone who has passed (even if they were also a revered experimental abstract filmmaker). Has a lot of blue in it, as blue is associated with being the colour of water, so it's got that going for it.

At least the other Brakhage films of this type have pretty colours, everything here is blotchy and ugly.

Besides Dog Star Man, I think Brakhage's hand-painted works are my favorites. A stunningly gorgeous tribute to Maya Deren (who I don't much care for), a beautiful kaleidoscope of vivid blues.

Stands out from his other hand painted work with its illusion of depth, and its complexity, which seems to trick on the brain (or maybe its real) into glimpsing faces and other tangible objects.
