Captures the essence of the book quite well, but the necessary shortcuts in the story and the questionable animation quality let it down a bit. However it still tells a good story in the way that entrances and horrifies kids at the same time, something 1970s British kids' shows excelled at. Just imagine this getting through Disney focus groups these days without being butchered like a bunny in a blender.

Have not read the book but I'm going to assume it's more narratively cohesive & well rounded. Honestly though this kind of children's epic is hardly brought down by such issues, especially when the aesthetic/thematic values are as powerfully presented as they are here. The quietly evocative animation, backgrounds, voice work & music provide grit to its survivalism & metaphysical heft to its fatalism. I like to think children can appreciate this but I'd be hesitant to test that on anyone I know.

Quite possibly one of the best animated films of all time. They could not have picked a better story to translate to film, and they quite possibly could not have done a better job conveying the emotions of the tale as well. Even grown-up, I still love this movie.

This was an absolutely beautiful movie that made me really nostalgic for the days where hand-drawn animation, watercolor backdrops, and orchestral scores were the norm. And it also seemed really damn rushed - in a way that I can't help but feel a 400-page narrative would feel much more contiguous than this 90-minute movie did. That said, the final 20 minutes or so were absolutely glorious and went a long way towards getting this picture on the positive end of these rankings.

40 years ago, this film scared me as a child. Watching it as an adult can be existentially terrifying. Pretty dark flick at times, but also pretty damn good. Should be required viewing for all the little kiddies; give 'em a dose of the cold, hard realities of life. Sweet dreams you little knee-biters.

A good adaptation of the book; unsentimental and not at all cutesy, lumbered by dull animation, poor design and an obviously low budget.

I'm conflicted with this movie because somehow I expected more from what I've heard over the years. I must admit that I don't know the novel. But, when I watched the additional material I understood what the problem of the movie is: It was directed by somebody who never before had directed an animated movie and that explained why I felt uneasy about the adaptation. It's uneven but on the other hand good in terms of being an independent production. Make up your own mind.

I'm really not sure why people cite this as an example of "adult" animation. It's mature by (Western) animation standards but I think it falls solidly in the camp of animated films which appeal to children on the surface but are intelligent enough for adults to enjoy as well, along the lines of a Toy Story or The Incredibles. It certainly doesn't come across as explicitly intended for an adult audience.

Watership Down is an oddity. It's often labeled as a kids' movie, and is based on kids' books, but the material is anything but. It's oddly dark, violent, and emotional, but people see that it's a movie about cartoon bunnies on an adventure, so it must belong in the kids' section. I'm a big fan of animation in general myself, and this is a must-see for any like-minded person.

Not as horrific or violent as many persons childhood memories will recall. That said there flash of gore and violence there is, is well presented, in what is a good adaptation and a high quality animation for its age and budget.

From the memories people have of this film from their childhood, I was expecting to see bunnies run through a meat grinder, the remains lit on fire and the ashes pissed on. Needless to say, it's a lot less violent than that, though there's a bit of bunny gore. But it's a surprisingly good film, one of the best animated films I've seen that takes itself so seriously. The fable-like quality of the tale helps suspend disbelief so that you can take it at face value.

A dark watch for kids, this is a good example of animal allegory. Its sobering and thought provoking, just not ideal for young kids to see as its somewhat graphic with depictions of violence towards rabbits and the like.

Martin Rosen's astonishing adaptation of Richard Adams's novel manages to have a relaxing, pastoral Britishness to it, while never hiding the story's preoccupation with violence and death. It's status as a children's film has been controversial over the years, but I think it's the best kind of children's film. It creates empathy by believably placing you in a realistic colony of rabbits and then teaches some fundamental lessons about life.

I loved it. I think the screenplay is super mature and straight forward. It doesn't at all feel like a kids movie and it doesn't try to spoon feed the audience. Kids movies (and animated movies in general) should be more like that. I also like the filmmakers' choice to leave in all of the BRUTAL violence and dreadful tone that I'm sure is straight out of the book. A handful of scenes legitimately had me anxious or claustrophobic. Very well directed, acted and animated. Very good.

A very good animated movie with a beautiful art style. IT follows a group of rabbits who leave their warren in search of a new home and run into problems on the way. The characters are somewhat archtypical, but they're nuanced enough to be interesting, and the same can be said about the story. While it is a children's movie it's not light fare.

Totally unique in style and tone and just gorgeous to look at. Above all else, it has one of my favorite scores in film history, brilliantly evoking the best English pastoralists like Elgar, Britten, and Vaughan Williams. How cool that they gave this a Criterion release.

Amazing, but at some points extremely grotesque. I have watched this since I was a kid, and that is something hard for kids to understand. The meaning of death and the brutal fighting between fuzzy rabbits that we want to cuddle when we're young, can bring about some questions that are not easy to answer.

Hackneyed anti-urbanism. Samey characters with samey voices. An episodic plot relying heavily on monomyth tropes. The occasional visual flights of fancy leave the blandly literal bulk of the film feeling all the more creatively starved. Due to its stuffiness, violence, and its source material's prestige, it's a byword among "adult cartoon" boosters, often praised alongside similar cult mediocrities like Felidae and Wizards.

Amongst its gorgeous backdrops that depict an almost fantastically bucolic setting, there are dark things and evil things hidden within Watership Down. Stunningly well-written, Watership Down almost suffocates with its non-stop tension and threatening world. This is one of the few films that surely and adequately depicts the persecution all little critters must face in their lives, and because of that it is both bleak and starkly beautiful. Recommended watching for anyone, child or adult.

A good effort, but inferior to both the novel and the spiritual successor movie by the same studio, Plague Dogs. The plot is unfocused in the first half. The biggest problem is the character; they are drawn so close, sound so alike and are so numerous that they become almost impossible to distinguish, and therefore impossible to care about. However, I think the villian is quite intimidating, and gets a good amount of screen time. Picks up in the second half, but dosent make up for slow start.

Like Disney, it has a sense of hot-blooded melodrama, although the timing of its hare's-breadth escapes and rescues is occasionally too hurried, due to some labor-saving and penny-saving shortcuts in the arduous animation process. This superior kiddie movie is probably the most metaphysically sophisticated animal story yet to reach the screen, but none among its quick and cunning animated rabbits is fit to challenge Bugs as the screen's premier bunny.

I don't think many people realize what this book/movie is actually about. It's about Jews and Nazi's and the holocaust. It is an interesting way to introduce to kids to the idea of the holocaust. If you like this movie check out the book "Terrible Things." Which is a great book for small children. No other review mentions what this story is actually about. Maybe you people should watch it again.

It's not as smoothly structured as I'd anticipated, but no real matter: Watership Down remains a thoughtful, plaintive and upsetting work, a precursor to the more broadly-targeted animation that the 1980s and beyond would harbour. The animation is lovely - and loving - from the light watercolour landscapes to the shocking blood reds and dark, black origin story.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that this is for kids. I mean, most of it is relatively inoffensive these days, but there is some pretty explicit violence and I think the mythology/themes would be lost on kids. However, as a not-kid (also known as an adult) I greatly enjoy it for the issues it tackles and the finesse that it has while doing so. Great animation for the time, the Bright Eyes moment was wonderful and it didn't overstay its welcome. There's also a constant fear here with the characters.

Some I feel ruined the genre. This was just too fear-based to ever enjoy. Whatever point it could make- it got lost in the storytelling.

Superb animated film presents a remarkably uncompromising, bleak vision of the novel which, while certainly grim and savage at times, ultimately becomes quite stirring and moving, thanks to a pearly British voice cast, and warm score highlighted by Garfunkel's wonderful vocalisation of 'Bright Eyes'. A mature, perceptive study of facism and brutality, without any attempt to sugar-coat the implications of its story for youngsters.

Impressed at how well the filmmakers retained the tenor of the story while trimming and rearranging certain elements. Of course, outside the prologue, the film lacks the deep connection to the mythic stories that form a chunk of the book's core for me. But I did appreciate the overall subdued tone, the animated English countryside, and, of course, Mostel's take on Kehaar.

Watership Down is a classic adventure story with a youth-friendly aesthetic, but realizes children will eventually have to come of age and stop only watching comedies. Triumphs aren't given by fortune but instead constant suffering full of threatening risks. The art and animation is pretty but blandly realistic, so it's the surreal religious visions where the film comes to life. This is a great story for maturing children, but the themes don't hold too much depth for adults.
