The amount one likes We Are Your Friends essentially boils down to how fond one is of EDM. The movie has some stylish flourishes, a couple of good performances, and a strong idea - marrying the coming-of-age plot with creating a signature track - and it's not boring.

A fair try at portraying what it's like to "make it" in the electronic music scene (although it wasn't clear which scene specifically they wanted to portray). But it is lacking. Having a fondness for electronic music could probably convince you to watch it (it did for me at least) but it doesn't have anything that stuck out.....except one thing: DJ-ing and producing music are two different things. One person could do both but the way these terms have been used interchangeably - disappointing.

Efron tries so hard to play a DJ...But it just won't work. We Are Your Friends doesn't really say much. At all. But, there are some moments in there where you get just a hint of emotion, and that's why I finished watching it. 40/100.

Wasn't bad I guess... But the critics were wrong for burying it.

I have no apologies for liking being a Zac Efron fan. I found this look at the necessary elements of being a DJ the very first film to capitalize on the profession. I also enjoyed seeing Wes Bentley after his role in American Horror Story. Given his past, I thank the people responsible for giving him this chance. The film was not given the promotion in my area that may have helped to make it a more popular.

Attractive people try to make it in the LA DJ scene. Worth it if you put it on in the background while you do something more interesting.

The only good thing about this film was the music and naked Zac Efron!

Doesn't know what it wants and falls a little short, when it comes to...well, everything, actually.
Becomes pretty stupid and full of itself in the last third, too, when it tries to be serious and dramatic all of a sudden. Which feels more laughable than anything else. You'd need better acting direction for any other type of effect, not to mention the dialogue.
The soundtrack elevates this to a tolerable music movie, though.
And I wanna see more of that Jonny Weston guy.

Zac Efron, having graduated from high school musicals, is now trying to win the college crowd with electronic music being a DeeeeeJaaaay. Kinda lame, but I mean, it's fine. Definitely could have been a lot worse, but chillin' vibes keeps it floating.

We Are Your Friends truly does give out summer vibes - Zac Efron shines and is supported well by the rest of the cast. The story is cliche and predictable and some artistic choices don't fit with the rest of the film but these can mostly be forgiven due to how likeable and enjoyable this film is to watch. The soundtrack is great and despite not really fitting into a genre, We Are Your Friends is a film you should go and see.

Watching all the flailing around, both literally and figuratively, I couldn't help but feel some compassion for people trying so hard to tap into deeper meaning by mainlining some of the most powerful, seductive experiences in the world. And simultaneous sadness that their experiences here are so divorced from the authentic transcendence and intimacy God invites us to experience in relationship with Him. (pluggedin.com)

Surprisingly thoughtful, albeit aimless, slice of materialistic life. Even the ridiculously contrived love triangle had good eye candy.

You will immediately want to go to a music festival after seeing this. I love me some Zac Efron headlining and what I liked most was the subject matter was just something a little different. Director Max Joseph of "Catfish" fame proves he has a particular style and it works in spades. Easy and enjoyable watch.
