This is more of a stagnated play, with a fine cast that struggle to bring many interesting or engaging emotions or observations from a lifeless script (besides what Naomi delivers by default). *Preview*: #13#, exp-3*, story, (reviews), Naomi.W!/10, R2.

Not entirely convincing, but still interesting.

Well-acted but very dreary marital drama, burdened by whining, self indulgent characters and a screenplay which offers little insight into them or their lives, other than underlining the mundanity and superficiality of their situation. Nevertheless distinguished by typically brilliant work by Dern, in a scorching portrait of repressed anger and frustration; she alone makes the film bearable.

It's hard to recommend We Don't Live Here Anymore, largely because of how much of it feels unnecessary. It plays for 100 minutes, but it feels a lot longer because of how much repetition is included. It also takes a lot longer than it should to get going and make me care, leading to a lot of boring points. It's also frequently confused about what it wants and where it wants to go, and is difficult recommend unless you're willing to trudge through the tedium in order to get to the good stuff.

"Failing to find the cinematic equivalent of Dubus's vertical writing, Curran and Gross's movie strains for truths it never earns." - Jay Antani

Any time you see the name "Dubus" attached to the story, you know you're in for some feel-bad wallowing. The deficiencies in the film are inherent in the screenplay: too many instances of "this family's house looks like this, that family's house looks like that," "this family eats breakfast like this, that family eats breakfast like that," "this family gets this type of mail, that family gets that type of mail." I get it already!! The performances are good though.

A well-observed drama about marriage and infidelity, with a focus on the after-effects more than the excitement of the deed itself. Like the dialogue, the camera observes these characters in the midst of mundane lives--taking off socks, doing dishes, and waking up to kids. I most appreciate the quiet tone and the overall narrative arc, though the repeated arguments and sometimes too-self-conscious dialogue become a but much after a while.

A small picture with Laura Dern and Naomi Watts about marriage and infidelity with in friendship between couples. Not that memorable after viewing, the couples are shallow and selfish, not likeable.

The flipside of Closer -- instead of four people trying to keep the others down, this movie focuses on the four people trying to stay together. Not as well executed as Closer (Nor is it at any point as interesting) but the performances are just as good, particularly from Dern and Watts (As usual)

Great ensemble of performances here with Dern leading the pack. More interested in the after effects of affairs than Closer, yet not nearly as polished or well-executed.

In my opinion a much stronger, and more realisitc, drama about infidelity than Closer. Yes, people can be cold and cruel to one another, but they are not monsters (as Closer would have you believe) as this movie shows. Features some great dialouge and even better acting.
