The decision to take an apolitical stance is itself a political decision. While this can be an appropriate choice when your film deals with WWII, it feels a lot appropriate when dealing with the Vietnam War. The film never addresses the larger political context surrounding this battle, and that feels wrong since it's fairly obviously an endorsement of the war without coming out and saying so.
