Two kids take a book from a trash can. They begin to read the story of a poor neighborhood in Mexico City. Carpenter Pepe "El Toro" lives with his daughter Chachita and woos pretty "Chorreada". Around them, a group of fellows live their lives in many ways: a pair of always-drunk women known as "La Tostada" and "La Guayaba"; a beautiful woman who always oversleeps; a hooker with pneumonia with a dark past. Tragedy comes when Pepe is falsely accused of robbery and sent to the jail. (imdb)

I must admit I struggled to get into the drama of this Mexican classic from Ismael Rodríguez, but over 4 hours between the two films I got to know the characters and my interest in them gradually grew. But that becomes the handicap of the first and more acclaimed film of the two. I was feeling more of its weaknesses than the affection for its people at this point. This is easily the more drama-heavy of the two and I think if they'd swapped the tone of the two it would have worked better with me
