Wedlock

If you, like me, have spent your whole life wondering why no one ever made a movie centered around those exploding prisoner collars from the Running Man, I am happy to inform you that your prayers have been answered. Wedlock is a surprisingly awesome low-budget sci-fi that does just that. And to top it off, they got the ever-kick ass Rutger Hauer to play the lead. Only the second time in my life I've seen a guy in a denim jacket piss on a half-conscious man floating in a mini pool. Watch TODAY.

One member of a gang of jewel thieves is double crossed by his partners and goes to a futuristic co-ed prison where the prisoners are linked in tandem via explosive collars. He escapes with his "wedlocked" partner, leading everyone on a merry chase to recover the hidden loot while trying not to blow himself up. Hauer was too old to be playing this sort of leading role in '91, Mimi Rogers doesn't show off her glorious boobs, and it's all pretty formulaic and trite...but Joan Chen is super cute.

The premise is ridiculous and so are all the plot points, but it's fun to watch and I'm getting to really enjoy Rutger Hauer.

For some reason, this isn't well-liked, generally. I think it's entertaining, with Rutger Hauer's effortless charisma pulling this sucker along at every turn

Chen and Hauer have a decent amount of fun here. That said, we really needed Tarantino to inject the thriller movie with some irreverent fun in the early 90s. This movie has a fun idea that could have been enjoyably shlocky a few years earlier, but now doesn't seem to know if it's a romantic comedy or a prison escape thriller or what.
