'Welcome to Leith' is a feature documentary chronicling the attempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notorious white supremacist Craig Cobb. Filmed in the days leading up to Cobb's arrest for terrorizing the townspeople on an armed patrol and his subsequent release from jail six months later, the film is an eerie document of American DIY ideals. The documentarians do well to create a sense of foreboding and horror around this portrait of true evil hiding in plain sight in one of the smallest towns in the country, but the most chilling part of the film and, perhaps, the most important part to see is how naked the hatred and bigotry is when the characters are allowed to speak freely. Some good questions raised around the balance of First Amendment freedoms and minimizing hate speech.

"Notorious white supremacist" lol Cobb lived off the government when he lived in Vancouver and regularly got chased around. Actually a decently well put together doc for such a subject matter. Imagine waking up and having Cobb's hair and still thinking you're the pride and joy of the lord. Holy moly

I wanted it to go deeper and the doc feels like it ends right as the third act is about to start, still, this is a chilling documentary. I'm so ashamed to be an american, honestly

A horrifying situation lacking the required depth of your standard documentary.

Kind of terrifying, but not in a fear-mongered kind of way.

A phenomenal film that stares evil in the face but acknowledges the problems with trying to silence it. While sympathetic to the residents of Leith, it also doesn't glamorize them, and some of the most powerful moments are when they discuss what they are willing to do to protect themselves from Cobb and his ilk.

For such a short run time and only skimming the surface this is a surprisingly interesting slice of racist pie. Where are the lines drawn at harassment and free speech, terrorism and civil rights?

Compelling doc that actually makes you think about the issue of free speech and how it's not as easy of an issue as you might assume.
