Wendell & Wild

Has way too many ideas and characters, but I'm a glutton for everything Selick's dishing out so all the excess is even more endearing to me. I've missed his work so much, and everything I love about him is in this film: the bizarre character designs, the weird sing-songy voice performances, the gleefully macabre story, it's all here. This was a total joy and immediately volleys itself high on my list of favorites for 2022.

Co-written by Selick and Jordan Peele, the director’s latest is filled with ambitious themes, clever ideas, and, of course, remarkable animation, but it’s made wobbly by the attempt to shove in everything its creators wanted it to contain. It’s so overstuffed it struggles to move.

there were a lot of great ideas in Wendell & Wild, all of which would probably have felt better explored and less rushed in a six episode mini-series than a feature-length movie. however, the animation and style really sold what could have been a forgettable affair.

Obviously it’s a visual masterpiece, an absolute feast for the eyes with every frame. The story itself isn’t so hot despite some strong themes, and the voice acting is mixed, but it’s a good spooky treat for kids.

Praxis?

Wendell & Wild's story & themes are great, but it was let down by its characters & dialogue. The animation style is better executed than designed. The voice acting and soundtrack are unremarkable. There's just something off about the film; be it familiar ideas (Wendell & Wild remind me of Pain & panic from Hercules), lacklustre world-building or simply that the film's subtext is too close to reality than fantasy. The film is still enjoyable, watchable, but perhaps not a classic.

A very original story with some wild creativity. A shorter runtime was definitely possible here, but I still enjoyed it a lot anyways.

Bu arada, yaşadığı yeri 1 hapishaneye dönüştürmek isteyen zengin aile vardır. Gotik tarzı, iblislerin sempatikliği, iyi ve kötünün tarafsızlığı, yerinde kullanılan sihir filmin harika etkenleri. Bayıldım. Tek sıkıntısı çok fazla sahne var. Filmin sonunda, harikalar, iyi insanlar yaratır. Mükemmel bukleler için saç kremi.

a very out of the box animation. totally recommended for when you are in the mood for something different.

Devils and details

"Wendell & Wild" fulfills its animated promise, but the story is crowded with many disjointed subplots. The film is admirable in its level of ambition and creativity, with enough working elements to overpower the weaknesses in pacing and story development. While not as terrifying as "Coraline," Selick's signature spooky handcrafted style crawls all over "Wendell & Wild," and Peele's insightful humor and horror genre experience shine.

I love the visuals and the soundtrack, but... who is this for, exactly? It feels like anyone old enough to get even half of the political allegory is going to be disappointed with a plot that's shrugged into the very lowest difficulty setting.

I found it strangely hard to follow and surprisingly unengaging. The animation was of course stellar, but not inventive enough for me to recommend the movie overall.
