The stunning on location photography and stirring soundtrack are thin but appreciated veneers on a shallow mess of a story that, at its best, captures a few invigorating moments of childlike abandon and, at its worst, simply doesn't make sense.

It's a weird movie. Zeitlin directed the hell out of this and the kids all did a great job. There were some laughs and some emotion. It's weird because on the other end it's a little boring. Probably could have wrote it a little better and fixed up the pacing/plot in general. I'm not connected to Peter Pan in any way so whatever it did with the source material I don't care, I just don't think it told its story that well.

Appropriately dark for a Peter Pan adaptation (though on the mild side as these things go). Critics don't seem to understand that Neverland is not a happy place.

I loved Beasts of the Southern Wild so I wanted to like this, but no deal. It's as beautifully shot and designed as that one was, which is why this will sound more negative than the score indicates, but it feels like a bit of a regression in some ways. It's not nearly as well acted, it's not as compelling as a story (being a twist on Peter Pan isn't an interesting direction, sorry) and it kind of just feels like Zeitlin is repeating himself with his brand of rural bayou fantasy.

The hipster version of Peter Pan is exactly as annoying and tedious as it sounds.
