There's some good suspense moments here, it's a decent war thriller with some horrifying scenes. But the premise is too absurd to tolerate. We never get a sense of why the Germans would go to such elaborate lengths to occupy a tiny village, nor how they all managed such perfect British accents. Gripping stuff, if you can overlook the film's implausibilities.

Brick-shitting horror (if it had come out a couple of years earlier at the height of the blitz). It still must've been pretty chilling and nowadays it's just a damn good fun thriller! Includes Dame Thora Hird (she of stairlift fame) machine gunning Nazis. They don't make 'em like this anymore!

Chilling premise; seems like a good candidate for a remake.

Went the day well is great piece of wartime propaganda. Dated but still tense and unexpected a real gem.

Melodramatic propaganda thriller. I'll bet it went down a storm back then, bit too far-fetched for me.

Considering the circumstances in which it was made, comes off better than one might expect. But it's still a bit ridiculous, and not very interesting or enlightening either.

What I loved about Went the Day Well? (1942) was that everything was so damn casual. The most casual a invasion on film! Everyone were just going on about their daily thing, so the German take-over came across just as unexpected on me as it did on these characters. A real nice touch.

A successful mixture of pseudo-realistic propaganda and entertaining action.

I appreciate the way the film uses the quiet and good natured English countryside and sharply contrasts it with shocking violence. It seems to me something of a wake-up call kind of movie, and in that, it is quite effective. Several of the characters have distinctive traits as the actors playing them do well to make them their own. Finally, I love the decision to focus on specific actions rather than the resolution of the action in its emphasis on personal duty for community well-being.

Ealing Studios made this remarkably odd little propaganda film during the height of the war. It starts with the tone of one of their amiable, rural comedies like "Whisky Galore!" but descends into some fairly brutal violence when the plot turns. It's a pretty tense and entertaining war film that clearly inspired "The Eagle Has Landed". When Leslie Banks appears on screen, you just know he's going to turn out tp be a villain.
