A group of German construction workers start a tough job at a remote site in the Bulgarian countryside. The foreign land awakens the men's sense of adventure, but they are also confronted with their own prejudice and mistrust due to the language barrier and cultural differences. The stage is quickly set for a showdown when men begin to compete for recognition and favor from the local villagers. (imdb)

Cultural barriers as a way to convey feelings of brotherhood, compassion, hostility, friendship. Grisebach's subtle, slow-paced, patient look might often seem detached, but is really emotional in the way it depicts the failure of late capitalism to understand the other side. There is dispute over water -- "us or them" --, a horse that gets accidentally killed and a German man that becomes almost Bulgarian. Falls for women, makes friends, and finally dances like in a Denis film.

Closely observed slice-of-life may lack dramatic momentum (its marginally weakest moments are when dramatic conflict is introduced), but this richly rewarding study of finding one's own community (even in the 'other' camp) is all the more engrossing for its unwillingness to speechify as to how this might translate to society at large. Neumann's subtle but completely natural and commanding lead performance is a great asset; Grisebach's unobtrusive camera brings a real sense of verisimilitude.

The realistic kind of movie I love, where it seems that the camera was just set up in the middle of a group of people (and in a way it was, because they are not professional actors).. Also loved how this film manages to talk about deep topics even though the main actors can't understand each other. Pity then that it gets a bit repetitive in setting up the main relationship, and the rivalry story feels almost tacked on.

Raw, cold and unsophisticated. Real gem for pessimists.

A layered interrogation of contemporary masculinity, nationhood, and the failures of late-stage capitalism and the European Union's ideals that rewards patience on the viewer's part with a poignant deconstruction of the titular genre.

transposing the tropes and iconography of the western onto a modern, colonial milieu complete with an elliptical naturalistic style, grisebach cannily highlights the contradictions of masculine self-image. she gets at the indirect, incoherent ways even the most well-intentioned men assert their identities over land, beast and people, suggesting how dangerous this can be and, further, how that danger is bound up in their appeal. a sad film which offers some wise observations but no easy answers.

The best western, that isn't really a western, since the mighty Aferim!
