Grrruaruararghhh, I wanna get on board with this movie but when you take a quick step back and strip it down it's really just a conventional coming of age drama. This was disappointing to me because I was under the assumption it was something more. But it's not. I'll concede theres an element of physical + bodily freedom not found in other teenage films, but it's mostly superficially explored.

The frequent gross out scenes of the film aren't doing it any favors. They are often distracting the film's narrative and turn it into a mixed bag of scenes. I'm not surprised it's based on a novel and it probably works better in that format but I'm not interested to find out for myself. Director David Wendt does a fine job introducing the characters and creates a great atmosphere in the beginning of the film but he can't keep it up all the way untill the end.Charlotte Roche is great in the lead

Good example of an emerging style I like a lot with fast pace, creative effects, blending scenes together and nonchalantly cutting back and forth between times and places as needed (Edgar Wright-esque?). Was really looking forward to a challenging look at what we emphasize and deny about our bodies especially w/r/t filmmaking; ultimately the film has other, more conventional things on its mind, but still mines taboo subject matter as a source of sincere drama and good-natured humor.

Wetlands tries to fool you that it is something different than an indie-coming-of-age, but that is really all it is. Of course, with that gimmick of being completely disgusting.

I spent most of Wetlands wondering what the hell I had gotten myself into, and by the end of it I didn't really have a satisfactory answer to that question, but I was still glad to have experienced it. It's like if Nymphomaniac was actually depraved.

The deliberately disgusting irreverence was fun for a while but Wetlands is too tonally erratic to be satisfying. The film slows down in its second half to focus on her psychological state, but the attempt to explain her behavior felt rather clumsy and calculated.

i haven't (and probably will never) read the novel, so i don't know if it shares the predicament. 2/3 of the movie are just offensive for the sake of offensiveness. the dilemma at its core is happily nudged aside for the sake of shit, cum and other fluids, only to be revealed when most people will probably not give a damn anymore. it could've transported a valid message, but this way it's more like somebody trying to explain the importance of social interaction on the example of "caligula".
