Revealingly, in the brief section on the state of criticism today and how Kael would fit in, the film/subjects avoid any mention of her disdain for liberal piety and moralistic pretension, to say nothing of monolithic corporate platforms. The end result is a highly selective celebration of a "strong woman", which she undoubtedly was. Tho' the film contains more unflattering details than reviews might lead you to believe (leemarvins is either fibbing or fell asleep). Enjoyed the bad impressions.

A big self promoter who misunderstood many things (i.e.most European art films, Shoah, the auteur theory etc), Kael nonetheless left a mark on film criticism, but that mark arguably led to many of the problems that exist today, even if she was better than most at this quote driven style, if not all. She certainly had more guts, for better or worse, and this documentary, at the very least, is a sad reminder of a time when critics actually mattered, and so did the medium of film. One and the same.

This movie was kind of a kiss-ass- documentary on Pauline Kael. No one except that curmudgeon Paul Schader dared to turn on the critique of the public persona of Kael. "Pauline Kael's film critiques were an endorsement of Pauline, not the movies". Would have loved to hear more about the Warren Beatty incident in 1979. Filmmaking was basic with contemporary critic talking heads with 10 sec soundbites intercut with film clips.

A pretty basic introduction to the critic's work and personality, but all the clips from classic films made this enjoyable.
