What Women Want (2000)

Nick, a somewhat chauvanistic advertising exec hot shot, has his life turned haywire when a fluke accident enables him to hear what women think. At first all he wants to do is rid himself of this curse, until a wacky psycologist shows him that this could be used to his advantage! His first target is Darcy McGuire, the very woman that got the promotion he wanted. But just as his plan is beginning to work, love gets in the way...

If you're going to make a movie that tries to capture people's -- both women's and men's -- thought processes, it really helps if you have some idea of what people's thought processes are like.

For a film supposedly showing a chauvinist being 'converted' to being an enlightened, equal opportunities kind of guy, it's incredibly sexist. Full of female and indeed plenty of male stereotypes, none of which are likable. Basically, Gibsons character has a super power which he uses to his own personal ends, then gets guilty about it, and doesn't really do anyone any good, apart from that geeky girl he gives a better job! Gash.

This movie could've (and should have) been the most perverted, twisted, fucked up thing ever made. It's a shame that no straight guys worked on this film cause man it really could've been awesomely disgusting.

Films with scenes involving men waxing their body hair to 'feel woman's pain' piss me off.

Any movie, in which two people romantically stare into each other's eyes for longer than 3 seconds, belongs in the lowest quintile (fact!) And if that scene takes place next to a taxi while the taxi driver is waiting for one of the two idiots, then that movie is utter rubbish and should be avoided at all costs (informed opinion based on facts).

Eh, decent chick flick. Too bad it's predictable and Mel Gibson was a rather unlikable leading man by this point.

Corney cliche garbage you'd only get into in order to pay the bills. Still, it would be pretty nice to be able to mind read so that's the one thing neat about this flick I suppose.

Women apparently want a mind-reading drunken anti-semite racist. How does a chap compete with that? By not taking a decent idea and railroading it with rom-com bollocks. That Simpsons episode where they take a serious film and insert gun fights, oh how this film needed that. And a shifty eyed evil dog, but every film needs that.

Unfortunately, Mel Gibson found out during this film that what women wanted wasn't anti-Semitism. Or liquor. Or being called sugartits.

Mel Gibson, who I have some disdain for, making a movie which I have disdain for (which is actually surprisingly rare). The moral of this story is that good ideas don't always work out well.

About the only conceivable reason to see this is that it was the last moment where Mel Gibson was actually appealing, before the crazy took over completely. The dubious premise just becomes an outsized tool for the stock rom-com technique of gross manipulation of other characters. I always had the feeling that it was trying--utterly ineptly--to try to make some "important" statement about chauvinism, but maybe it's just the generic heavy-handed manipulation of the writing.

Apparently, women think according to stereotypes. Good to know!

Little known fact: Mel Gibson's Nazi affiliations are foreshadowed in this film. Not by the content but by it's mere existence. Really, only a Nazi would agree to be a part of such an atrocity.

this is what women want? yeah, in the most oversimplified and moronic way thinkable. don't get me wrong, i also am no friend of the strange and inconclusive female value system, but i am pretty certain it goes beyond neediness. ah right, and if you dump 'em, you better be homosexual! this movie tries to explain a ferrari v12 engine by saying "it runs on gasoline".

I wanted more comedy and less being a serious romance movie. It's a ridiculous plot, and the women's thoughts are ridiculous! So make the whole movie that way. Thankfully, it is humorous enough how dated something can get in 20 years.
