I was expecting this to be better cause of my love of both Allen and LD. It's not bad but it's nothing remarkable either. But luckily even Woody Allen's bad movies are still somewhat enjoyable. The luck thing Woody already did much better in Match Point but the critique of modern art was pretty subtle and genius. This is in Woody's top 5 worst.

For any Larry David or Woody Allen fan this is a must. A lot of the cinaphiles will complain about the sub-par acting or the poor character development or the fact that the storyline wasn't very impressive. Give me a break people. Its not that type of movie. For me it was like watching an hour and a half long episode of Curb written by a misanthropic Allen. It made me laugh out loud more than any movie in the last 5 years, and for christ sake, isn't that what a comedy is meant to make us do?

This character-driven story only has enough character and enough drive for perhaps the first 30 or 40 minutes. After this the characters seem to have nowhere to go, so the parents are introduced. Neither are interesting characters. Both are huge clichés. Both go through overnight character-development so unbelievable and uninteresting I almost left the theater in protest. What started out as an interesting relationship study was degraded to something silly, totally undermining the first act.

Entertaining enough, but Allen's observations here don't feel particularly incisive or genuine. It instead comes off as a pandering attempt at broad, fish out of water humor tailored to a more sophisticated audience that wants to laugh at repressed rubes and cantankerous city dwellers.

"Whatever Works" is a minor Allen effort, but it's still a highly enjoyable and witty piece of typical Woody nihilism. The premise is familiar, the evolution even more so and the film just doesn't carry the poignancy of Allen's earlier features. But it's still quite entertaining. David, Wood and the rest deliver strong comedic performances, the non-stop banter is occasionally hilarious, while the endless romantic complications and the director's pessimistic obsessions unfold pleasurably.

Classic Woody Intellectual narcissistic deconstruction of the human condition only with a warm hollywood wrap up. Hilarious. Any Larry David or Woody Allen enthusiast's delight. Larry David is not a typical Allen comedic character lead choice, but I am just so biased coz I love LD that it worked for me, and because I think he delivered so well Allen's neurotic narcissistic side, but also his old wise wisdom that inevitably led to the hopeful ending and it's title to suit.

The first ten minutes or so almost feel like vintage Woody Allen (and Larry David makes a superb Allen avatar), but the more caricatures from Mississippi show up, the weaker the movie gets. The love stories are tepid and the female characters are so awful and idiotic it's unbelievable that this is the same writer-director of the women in Hannah and Her Sisters (or, for that matter, Vicky Cristina Barcelona just last year).

Good comedy with tremendous dialogues and, frankly, I don't know when I laughed so much during a movie for the last time. Wonderfully cynical, refreshingly honest. It's not a master piece by any measure but watching Larry David being a dick for an extended period of time was quite enjoyable.

A couple of solid laughs here, but that's not saying much, esp. w/ so many CARICATURES instead of characters running around. Unfortunately, 4 the past 20 years Allen's films have, 4 the most part, lacked any new insights or inspiration on his part & feel as cranked-out as his one-a-year pace would indicate. He's plowed the same existential angsty musings for so long and so often that he's now created a paradox: a comedic trifle about the horrible meaninglessness of life.

If one accepts the usual theatrics by Larry David, there are real gems in his interactions with Evan Rachel Wood. I have reservations mainly toward the happy-end, which almost ruined the well established dickheadedness of David's character. Whatever. It works.

Man, what a turd. Woody needs to go back to Europe, because he cannot make good films in America anymore. Larry David wasn't bad, but this was terribly written. This wouldn't have even worked in the 70s. The badness of this made me incredibly angry. It's such a shame that he turned around and made this right after the excellent VCB.

Entertaining piece in which Larry David plays to perfection one of the best Allen anti-heroes since Alvy Singer in Annie Hall. Evan Rachel Wood plays the quirky dumb blonde nicely and the first 30-45 are packed with very funny material. The script takes a couple of wrong turns and ends up lost in nowhereville, but half a great Woody Allen movie is still better than the average ones he's put out recently.

somewhat of a rehash of his earlier scripts, it's obvious that Allen wasn't aiming to innovate. that said, the movie doesn't break ground, but still, it's quite funny and entertaining from start to finish. Allen is comfortable in his home court NY, and manages to squeeze some more juice out of his trademark shtick. I can't quite understand his fixation of barely legal teens, though.

What's the matter that this isn't an original film? It's surprisingly funny, despite not being among Allen's best. But it has a strong supporting cast and both the stars, Evan Rachel Wood and Larry David, are in their best shapes. Wood as the moron WASP, David as the intelectual pessimist, paranoid deliver the laughs in a story that stars bitter and funny and ends up heartwarming.

Starts off funny, but becomes dominated by stereotypes and preachiness after it's first third. I'm not overtly religious, but I still can't believe the treatment given to Christians in the film. The film seems to think that a belief in God automatically makes a person misguided, floating in lies until they reach Woody's idea of an ideal worldview. I understand he may not agree with religion, but to be so cavalier about it rejects the ideals of tolerance that he and Hollywood claim to support.

Won't be regarded as one of Allen's best, but I'm not fussed, I enjoyed this a lot. Once you get past the fact that Larry David isn't playing Larry David, and is playing Woody Allen then there so much here to enjoy. Allen contemplating existence and death is convoluted, but very funny. One drawback is Cavill, who is terrible. There is one scene where Wood asks him "you must be a good actor" and he replies "I try", when he should have said "no, I'm fucking terrible at it". Still recommended.

As we know from past experience, other people trying to be the voice of Woody Allen never works. I love Larry Davis but here he sounds incredibly awkward delivering these lines. The film does have a few good jokes, even one or two howlingly funny ones. But they're lost in a morass of tired bits, uninteresting plot developments, and stock characters who transform into other stock characters. The uptight religious conservative who discovers he's a repressed homosexual? REALLY, Woody?

The laughs come fast and furious in the first half or so when Larry David dominates the proceedings. But as more and more characters arrive, Allen's poor caricatures sap the life from what had seemed to be an interesting and even touching movie. Pretty poop. David and Wood are probably the two most annoying leads Allen has ever conjured up - one is a stock grouch and the other is a ditzy Southern stereotype. Largely unfunny outside of David - LOL! Mississippians love Christianity and voting Republican! And the rest of the movie teaches us that life is meaningless and infidelity is cool, shopworn themes we all know and love by now. Overall, I imagine this is what Woody Allen is normally like to people who hate him.

I liked Larry David as an Allen type character who is much more angry and frustrated than Allen himself ever come across, but the movie on the whole didn't hit for me. Quite frankly I'm not sure if it was the acting or the characters themselves that rang untrue, (probably both.) I get that the whole thing is supposed to be a parable of sorts, but the entire film felt untrue. That's bad. That's doubly bad for an Allen film set in New York.

The combination of Larry David's (or, really, Woody Allen's since David is playing Allen's role) trite cynicism and the overbearing stupidity of the other characters fails to produce any laughs, and speaks only of Allen's view of himself and those around him. Also, Allen, of all people, should _strongly_ consider not making films about beautiful young women who fall in love with and marry far older men. Like, Jesus dude.

Larry David is the closest Woody Allen surrogate that Woody Allen will ever find, but he's different enough here to make the central Woody Allen character refreshing (try putting more Woody Allens in a sentence than THAT). It's Allen with some of his most cynical, arrogant stuff, and having it spew out of the mouth of Larry David is some of the funniest stuff he's ever done. The film dives sharply in laughs after a while, but I can't help enjoying it all.

Larry David felt a bit awkward, a bit forced in this movie. I think the reason is because he is reading a script, where on something like Curb Your Enthusiasm there is a lot of improv so it sounds more natural. The dialogue on this movie is too snappy to be improv. Woody Allen can pull it off better. My other problem is that Evan Rachel Wood's character was way to stupid and innocent for her age. At times she sounded like a 5 year old asking stupid questions. Overall it was pretty good though.

David was great and his character was funny (although some people won't find it funny...it's typical Woody Allen humor). Ok, there are a lot of old themes, but here Allen is more cynic then ever, more exasperated than ever, also - mainly, in the end - against his cynical view of the world, so is not the same old thing. This didn't work. Half of it is misanthropic, full of cynicism and contemptuous of everything that is generous and human. The other half is based on the idea that once you become morally enlightened you will get rid of your conservative prejudices and adopt the lifestyle of a progressive liberal living in NY. Allen is stuck on chaos theory lately, my guess it's fear of death that did this to him. We get your point of view: nothing has any meaning, there is no god and everyone should find happiness doing whatever works for them. Now go see a therapist and move on, Woody. Woody Allen's Boris is such a despicable character--proclaiming himself to be smarter than everybody else and disgustingly filling his boring little life with constant belittling of other people. Unmistakably minor effort from Allen, despite throwing in our faces an older-man-younger-woman relationship. (Take *that*, make of it what you will.) Allen has long exhibited a tendency towards intellectual snobbery, but he has never before let it so boundingly off the leash. The minorness of his efforts has become, besides a regular feature of them, a major part of their attraction. He is no longer out to set the world on fire. He is just out to keep the candle lit.
