Fast, madcap and incredibly funny. The fun had during the making is infectious when you watch it and it doesn't deminish with repeat views. Incredible chase sequence, brilliant one liners and so madcap that its unreal. If you need a good laugh give this a go.

Streisand is adept at the speedy delivery crucial to screwball, but I don't find her the least bit charming. And O'Neal (who struggles to pull of befuddlement and deadpan) is just plain wrong for his part. Kahn is okay, but the rest of the supporting cast is rather grating. With one more exception: the flabbergasted judge who, towards the end, is good for a few laughs in the most amusing scene of the film.

A love letter to the screwball comedy, and despite having a multitude of problems it succeeds in the one place that matters most, it's consistently funny.

Definitely worth to watch.... It's clever, funny, madcap, screwball, anyway a great comedy...I f you want my advice to get a real good time watching a comedy movie, take this one. I didn't laugh that much in a long time. Streisand is incredibly charming...

Hilarious throw-back to 30s/40s screwball takes a madcap spirit and pitches it at an almost surreal level, aided by O'Neal's straight-man portrait of bewilderment, arguably Streisand's most likable, controlled and simultaneously relaxed performance, and some hilariously deadpan supporting work from Kahn as the formidible 'Eunice.' Full props to Bogdanovich for maintaining a fever pitch throughout, without (for the most part) exhausting his audience!

This is such a silly, wacky comedy. They don't really make Hollywood farce like this anymore. So many great comedy character actors in this. Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Austin Pendleton to name a few. This is an underrated gem.

I found this movie to somehow be both entertaining and a great big chore, both at the same time. Large parts of it are actually very funny, but boy is it wearisome. Good thing it's not that long.

I very rarely laugh at a higher frequency than I do during the last 40 minutes of this fast-paced, nostalgic ride. Involved is the second greatest chase of all time, next to The French Connection, which features something in each and every shot that makes me laugh every single time I see it. Then there is the courtroom scene, which may rival To Kill a Mockingbird purely based on the force of laughter Liam Dunn alone induces as the judge.

As I am not usually a fan of screwball comedies, color me surprised that I had a blast with Bogdanovich's game of three card monte. Most of the zaniness works, but the shining star is the gorgeous Streisand. She spits fire with all her energy and spunk.

There are a couple funny bits of physical comedy, a fair amount of one-liners that fall flat and drag down the funnier bits, this lead is kind of annoying, and oh here comes the car chase yeah okay this kinda owns.

Maybe I just happened to be in the right mood when I watched this, but it is one of the funniest films I've seen in a long time. In fact, perhaps one of the funniest I've ever seen. As such, further viewings are required (my rating may increase or decrease, but the latter seems unlikely!). If you embrace the farcical nature of what is happening then you can only enjoy this wild ride. Bogdanovich does not miss a beat and neither does O'Neal or Steaisand.

Holy crap, I like Barbra Streisand in something. She's actually really good. And Ryan O'Neal seems to be trying his best Cary Grant/Clark Kent impersonation and doing pretty good, too. What movie is this, what am I watching, who am I.........oh look, car chase.

Wow, Bogdanovich really shouldn't do comedy. There are maybe two laughs in the whole movie and it's annoyingly not half as clever as it thinks it is.

The screewball dialogue is mostly well written and the wackiness of the plot is funny enough. But the screewball style seems mannered here. The difficult thing in doing this kind of movie, I believe, is that it's very dependent on the actor's chemistry which Streisand and O'Neal lack. The biggest drawback is O'Neal who tries to do his best Cary Grant. But as we know, only Cary Grant can do Cary Grant.

(Viewed on 15/06/11): Arguably Bogdanovich's only truly successful 'straight' comedy, W.U.D, his homage to screwball comedies, was an early sign of the nostalgic tendencies that would eventually overwhelm him. Unlike his contemporaries, he was decidedly backwards looking, and this retro obsession served him well on W.U.D, a funny, if at times overly self conscious, romp with Steisand at her most lively and O'Neil in the Cary Grant role. It's no classic, but it is charming and good natured.

much of the movie is like the chase sequences from scooby-doo, that not necessarily a bad thing. for the most part the acting is pretty good, but the overall feeling is a bit average.

Absolute madcap perfection, full of hilarious lines and great performances and unbelievable set-pieces, guided by an expert steady hand. I think this might be the first thing I’ve ever seen Streisand in and she was amazing

Madeline Kahn destroys ever scene she is in. I also wasn't really expecting O'Neal and Babs to do screwball comedy so effortlessly. I thought Randy Quaid was playing the Swedish professor, and was really confused as to how different he looked. We need to bring back car chase scenes set in San Francisco.

Streisand is radiant. The script is kinda funny. In this current era of cinephilia it’s not surprising to see people run to the alter of Bogdanovich and his brand of nostalgia cinema. Since that’s all we have now

The ultimate madcap screwball comedy never misses a mark and never ceases to impress with gags, chases, or anything at all. A rare, raucous ride that gets even funnier the more you watch it.

Rather inept. Script features some terrible exchanges and gags--spoof or light-hearted takeoff or just...bad? I'd blame O'Neal, except I don't think anyone could have done a thing with that character. Sure, Streisand is fun--but it would be hard to miss with that character. The last half-hour is definitely the best part--with a zany chase and the courtroom scene (complete with pissed off judge). And of course one of the all-time best last lines ("That's the stupidest thing I ever heard").

A throwback to the screwball comedies of the mid-century. Obviously, you have to toss a lot of rationality out the window in this genre; when you do, it's usually good, clean fun. This one felt a little measured, like the funny beats were on a metronome. I enjoyed it, but not enough that I would rush right back to watch it again.

A delightfully kooky romp reminiscent of classic screwball comedies, WHAT'S UP DOC is a brilliant orchestration of frivolous chaos. The film's manic pace belies its impeccable timing, and it has fun with drive-by homages to other films while thumbing its nose at anything that could be considered serious and adult - it's Bogdanovich temporarily seizing the "film school brat" moniker applied to his younger (and more sober) contemporaries.

An oddly mannered, self-conscious screwball pastiche that sort of works, but the sheer studiedness of it prevents it from every truly attaining the gravity-defying levity that characterizes the best representations of the genre it so carefully models itself after (although to be fair i've seen plenty of second-rate real screwballs less funny than this). If anything, it feels more like a precursor to the quasi-academic exercises of Todd Haynes or even Wes Anderson in his more "madcap" moments.

A lot is made of it's status as a screwball comedy throwback, but truth be told ... I think the screwball comedy elements are superficial. There's a lot of stuff you can point to, but stylistically it feels very much like a comedy of it's own era. Anyway ... I like it because I think it's pretty clever and quite funny.

O'Neal and Streisand do a passable job of recreating the archetypal male/female dynamic of yesteryear's screwball classics, but the supporting cast is disappointingly bland and the writing doesn't invite a great deal of laughter. Its anarchic spirit is indomitable though, and for this reason it's largely an enjoyable ride.

An ode to the screwball comedy, it largely captures the spirit of those earlier films. Like most screwball comedies, there are so many jokes coming so fast that some are bound to hit while many miss. The chase toward the end is often great (the window pane homage to the silents was nice). While Streisand and O'Neal give it their all, they're no Grant and Hepburn (who is?) and the dialogue doesn't always come off as properly snappy. O'Neal sometimes feels wrong for the role. Fun time, though.
