When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism

Loved the self-reflexivity in this clever, wryly humorous film. Several conversations center around notions of form vs. function, sometimes in explicitly filmic contexts (film vs. digital), but other times in different contexts (chopsticks vs. knife-and-fork). When, late in the film, the two leads play out a scene in the reverse of what they've been discussing, this sense of self-reflexivity reaches its height. Essentially, the film insightfully explores the nature of form and film production.

I frequently wonder where that very funny Porumboiu of '12:08 East of Bucharest' disappeared and why he has succumbed to the pretentiousness that started at one point to plague the so-called Romanian New Wave. This is fine, but it sort of leaves me cold. The director main character is a douche. Too bad, because Bogdan Dumitrache is an awesome actor. He can do better role-wise, but who's gonna write for him?
