A hundred miles away from the scene of a grizzly murder in small town American, Jill Johnson (Belle) settles in for a routine night of babysitting. With the children sound asleep and a beautiful home to explore, she locks the door and sets the alarm. But when a series of eerie phone calls from a stranger insists that she "check the children," Jill panics. Fear escalates to terror when she has the calls traced. And what the police find turns the perfect babysitting job into a 16-year-old's worst nightmare. (Screen Gems)

When remaking a horror movie based upon a gimmick that has become outdated in the last 25 years, you might want to try adding something scary to the film or at least rely on something other than loud noise to add suspense. Once again, another stellar effort by the cowards in Hollywood.

There isn't anything good about When a Stranger Calls. Actually, there was one interesting shot in which Jill runs around the house, zooming from room to room, and we don't cut away until she stops. That made me appreciate that there is a little bit of talent from at least one member of the production crew. Most of the cinematography is just bland, though, so maybe it was just a stroke of luck.

Dull and somewhat ponderous "horror" film never builds to a satisfying payoff, or even indulges in any successful scare set pieces along the way - the threat on the under end of the phone is never developed or escalated sufficiently until the ho-hum final act (and an unforgivably pointless and derivative epilogue). Slickly made, and Belle makes for a likable enough heroine, but it's all for naught - kinda fun to see baby Tessa Thompson too (not that she's given anything of import to do).

typical thriller/horror movie where you can see exactly what's going to happen five minutes before it does. while watching the main character wander around this huge house alone investigating noises (like the ice cube tray dumping into the despenser), with no way to defend herself, you think "no one could possibly be that stupid," then she goes outside to the guest house, then goes back to the main house, being vulnerable the entire time. and what's with never revealing the stalker?

Takes the best part of the original, the opening scene, and makes that the whole movie. Has a grip on you the whole movie. Every noise or light going on makes you jump. Directed shockingly well with great use of shadows. Suffers a bit at times with the whole the mid 2000s numetal/Saw aesthetic, especially the camera swooshing. Also, lowers the stakes a bit when you actually see the kids because you know they will never really show a kid murdered in a big studio horror

Not entirely poor but the majority of the movie is one constant, "what was that?!" that it's so hard to take seriously in any way.

The idea of a remake of this film was absolutely incredible, and the unfolding of the plot is great. In a youthful and modern, the film kept me riveted until the end. I was not disappointed.

A bit predictable and slow with way too many red herrings, but ended up being watchable. Not very scary or suspenseful, but there are worse films out there. The setting is kind of nice. Didn't like the ending.

This movie is really just insultingly bad, but at least its awfulness makes for high comedy. "We traced the call. IT'S COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE, OH EM GEE". All 5 points of this score are dedicated to Belle's "ehhn-HUH, ehhn-HUH" pained breathing, which is the funniest part of the movie. I dare you to watch the trailer without laughing.

It has a reality factor that is pretty scary. This is just some girl babysitting and there's someone in the house with her. Pretty creepy but it's been done in tons of other movies. Just the other movies use it for a single part, this one uses it the entire movie. All together it could have probably been cut down to a 30 minute movie, and when you finally see the killer... eh, no care ever.

Rewatching this, I realized how much better it was than I remembered it being. The acting isn't the best, and the story is essentially a copy-paste redo of the original urban legend set to the mid-2000's, but there's a solid amount of atmosphere to it that makes up for that. It's short & sweet, doesn't overstay its welcome, and does a really good job of setting up plot elements for use later. It could've been better, sure, but by no means is it awful. Also, seeing Tessa Thompson was neat.

It's better than I expected. The girl is attractive and is not the worst actress out there. The concept is interesting and there are some real admirable attempts made at suspense. It's good mindless entertainment.

Simon West's remake of a decent little well-structured somber thriller, vintage 1979, indecently increases the budget, the scale, the affluence, and the sound effects, while dragging things out interminably and destroying the structure.
