When the Clouds Roll By

The premise is downright idiotic, and the execution of the main plot doesn't help much, but the film makes up for it in two ways. The first is a very charming performance from Fairbanks who helps bring his character, and the associated narrative, more pathos than they deserve. The second is the interspersed bursts of visual creativity that are some of the most engaging and entertaining I've seen from a 1910s feature.

Infectious and creative, a true forgotten classic.

Gaslighting taken to the next level. Indeed, gaslighting before 'Gaslight' (1938) and 'Gaslight' (1944). Fairbanks Snr. here is present in all his athleticism, charm and wit. The 'dream/nightmare' sequence and the 'battle between emotions and reason' scenes are very well executed and particularly pleasing to watch. The finale is quite the spectacle. Never underestimate the power of a sense of humour! Rating may increase on additional viewings.
