Where Are the Dreams of Youth?
Ozu revisits the dichotomy between schoolboy idealism and working world realities, this time focusing on four college friends, one of whom (Tatsuo Saito) happens to be the son of a corporate executive; the son takes over upon his father's death, and his friends come seeking employment. Their friendship clearly isn't the same under this new working relationship, the subordinates become yes-men to the point that one of them says nothing when Saito casts an eye on his fiance. (imdb)

It took a couple of viewings before I appreciated this Ozu production. It's a good little story. Subtle, yet simple about a gang of friends as they finish school and start their adult lives with conflicts with work and love as the challenges.

Its a solid, relatively light hearted drama with strong performances by the lead.

does well in its setup, but rushes to an ending. The movie takes all of its time to reach an explosive climactic blow up and beat down, followed by waves and smiles as it wraps itself in a bow in the final 60 seconds.retains Ozu's style, revisits some of his favorite moments and feelings, but fails to coalesce into a cohesive whole due to its abrupt ending that shouts at you what the whole movie is supposed to be about.

There's something definitely unsettling about watching a silent movie without a score on tv in your apartment building where you're hearing your neighbours and assorted shit outside your door but a master like Ozu can still draw you in.
