"...and then Nazis arrive but Clint's all like 'over my dead body' and shoots them and then the explosions start and then there's more shooting and then they try to escape from the castle and that's why this movie was great and I'm totally making the bestest game ever out of it when I'm older." The classmates remain silent, barely paying attention. Miss Crabtree frowns. "That wasn't even a book report! You and your silly dreams won't ever amount to anything, Wolf N. Stein. Now sit down!"

Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton shoot about a million Germans each in this entertaining if cartoonish WW2 flick. The Germans are dumb as bricks; there are enough explosions to go around the table twice; you've got your standard, personality-free, uninteresting female characters; and there are numerous convoluted plot twists, including a rather unimpressive one at the end. Also the movie overstays its welcome by at least 15 minutes. Other than those things it's a very enjoyable romp.

I liked the pairs in the film (Smith & Schaffer and, ahem, Heidi's, respectively). Also, the extended scene smack in the middle was good, with Burton trying to one-up his opponents with a deceptive yarn. The film is comparable to an old rollercoaster: Neither the look nor the action quite measure up to today's standards but it's a damn good time while you're on the ride. After the aforementioned loop halfway through, it's downhill the rest of way (a good thing, of course, keeping the analogy).

I could say a lot about this spy action escapade adventure movie. I'll keep it to this: There's a brief, wonderful moment where Clint Eastwood dual wields machine guns.

A plot whose sheer convoluted complexity astounds anyone who tries to understand it. But it's Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton shooting Nazis and boy do they shoot a lot of them.

Burton and Eastwood kill hundreds of Nazis, the plot is incomprehensible, and they escape from the castle in a seemingly indestructible bus. In short, an amazing movie.

The plot doesn't make a lick of sense but when you have Clint Eastwood mowing down scores of Nazis and Burton apparently suffering from a middling hangover throughout it's hard to hate. A whole buttload of explosions and a getaway in a big red bus secures a even more favorable rating.

Richard Burton was amazing, perfect really. Clint was Clint, and the others were not interesting and emotionless The film itself wasn't that exciting nor interesting in first 75 minutes, then it finally got better and more interesting - but still lacking. The mission to 'raid' Schloss Adler fortress seemed mission impossible, but was presented like it was a walk in the park. The film could've been so much better, it's still decent/good though - just don't expect a masterpiece.

A very enjoyable and occasionally utterly ridiculous WWII adventure film with many iconic moments. Burton and Eastwood are great throughout and the special effects are notably effective for the time the film was made.

More of an adventure film than a war movie. It's a little long, but it's pretty tense throughout. Quite a lot of fun.

Delightfully pulpy and convoluted with some fantastic sets and costuming. Score is pretty good too. Probably the closest thing we have to a cinematic version of the Wolfenstein series.

In the course of executing one of the most insane, convoluted and nonsensical plots in secret service history, Clint Eastwood sure does murder a lot of Nazis and blow a lot of shit up. This was a pretty great use of 2 and a half hours.

Solid guys-on-a-mission film. Forget the convoluted plot and enjoy young Eastwood and world-weary Burton share screen time and shoot bunch of Nazis in "who dares wins" kind of mission.

My daydreams as a six year old lad that were virtually identical to this film although I wasn't nearly as drunk as Richard Burton whilst eviscerating nazi scum.

How the hell have I failed reviewing this until now?! Where Eagles Dare is in my book the grand daddy of modern action thrillers, with a grizzled Burton out-macho'ing a young Eastwood, and absolutely stockpiled on twists and turns. Also, it's a scientific fact that there's not one hour in a given day, where this film isn't playing on at least one TV channel somewhere in the world.

Sure, it's got a few plot holes, yes, it's a bit on the farfetched side, but, seriously, who cares? This is exactly what cinema was originally meant for - some escapism, fun and adventure in the company of great characters. What more can you ask for?

A superb piece of film-making. The Richard Burton interaction at the nazi HQ around the table was a magnificently well-crafted and carefully written scene, that I admit kept me guessing time and again what was going on. Burton, Eastwood - as always - and the support cast delivered well in this very atmospheric spy action film, with great sets, score, impeccable pace - albeit slightly longer that necessary run-time - in what is a very enjoyable and well-shot film.

One of the most inappropriately paced movies of all time and a shining example of Hollywood idiocy and extravagance. The last hour does deliver on the promise of mounds of nazi corpses, for what that's worth.

There are some excellent action sequences and some very tense moments here, but I can't help but to feel they got overambitious with a desire to be unpredictable. The Nazi dinner raid scene is simply ridiculous, and it's interesting to see a film this old, and with actors this good, that's silly in the same way modern action movies are.

Well, plausible is definitely not what they were aiming at here. A good first half, but then it just gets sillier and sillier. More fireballs than the A Team (which at least was meant as a joke), and Clint's machine gun ends up taking out most of Germany. Everyone must be using some kind of smart bullets btw, which only work on Germans. Good-looking flick, though the editing is a bit goofy in spots. Dick is good, and Clint is Clint. A half-hour too long (but I'll say that about any 2:30 movie).

It's awfully long but notable for its fine location work, super action set-pieces, high body count and massive amount of explosions. The stars have chemistry although it's hard to accept the lumbering Burton leaping between moving cable cars.

Man this movie had a lot more twists and conspiracies and double crossings and hidden identities than I thought I was getting into. My brain ain’t that big in the morning bro. But I did dig its snowy mountain village and creepy Nazi castle settings and vibe and mood; I feel like a lot of 60s movies are good at setting that mood. Got some good Clint shoot em up action.

Arguably the best Alistair McLean film adaptation to date, Alistair wrote the script himself. Solid interaction between Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. The lovely Mary Ure not to forget and Ingrid Pitt can be seen as a waitress at "Zum Wilden Hirch". Perfect war cocktail with beautiful pictures by Arthur Ibbetson and a legendary soundtrack by Ron Goodwin.

The acting is not the problem here--Eastwood and Burton do what they can with the material. (Well, Burton is rather stone-faced, but the role calls for it.) It's the ludicrous plot and the poor production values that drag this down to sub-par levels. The producers fell back on lame fight scenes and explosions to make up for all else that was missing. There are so many better WWII films ("Dirty Dozen", "Patton", "Great Escape", etc.) that I can't recommend you waste your time here.

This film can dress itself in the most authentic costume ever made, but it's an embarrasingly false and callous film all the way through. The Dirty Dozen without the subtle humanity and foggy irony.

Felt a little weird how the german parts were cast. For a movie this serious/untrashy. Also, the fact, that both Germans and British, or whoever they pose to be, all speak English some with a cartoonish accent, some not, can get pretty confusing at times. Great and clever movie, though. Especially loved how the movie starts right where the (very cleverly thoughout and, concerning this movie, one and only) mission starts and ends right where the mission ends.
